I was thinking about remakes or covers of songs that are as good or better in their own right as the original... a few that came to mind were:

-Dixie Chicks "Landslide" (orig. Fleetwood Mac)

-R.E.M. "Pale Blue Eyes" (orig. Velvet Underground)

-Gillian Welsh/Old Crow Medicine Show "The Weight" (orig. The Band)

-The Feelies "I'm a Believer" (orig. The Monkees)

Muzza brings up a good point. I've heard numerous released covers, some illustrated by Damon67, that when you hear them, you think, "Why?"

I really like a cover song that puts a new twist or some different energy into a good song. I think I'd rather listen to good covers than 99% of the new songs coming out now.

Some covers that work:
Summertime Blues /The Who
Reason to Believe / Stewart
Bobbo / Right Field

Some covers that don't:
Behind Blue Eyes / some rapper guy whose name I can't remember right now.
Signs / Tesla... No twist. To faithful to the original
American Woman / Kravitz

There was a rumor over on the Who Forum that Townsend was going to cut an entire CD of covers. Sorry to say it's not going to happen.

And I'm thinkin' that at Amelia, Matt Smith said something about his next CD having a good number of covers on it. Covers with a twist.

I agree Hurt/Johnny Cash would have to be in the top 5.
