Location: Utah | What morsels of wisdom can you offer on setting up a music room? The eldest daughter has moved out, freeing up a bedroom for music. After less than a week I find that the kids just leave guitars, mandos, and cases strewn across the floor, inviting someone to step on something breakable.
There is one inside wall which is where the instruments should be kept. Obviously leaning cases against the wall is not a system that works for this crowd.
I'm thinking of having my 6778LX, an Alvarez-Yairi 12, and a mando hanging up. Below on floor stands would be a couple acoustics, maybe the Preacher and my headless electric.
What are your experiences with wall hangars and floor stands in terms of safety? |

Location: Slightly northwest of Trader Jim | I have 6 guitars hanging in my "man room" WITH "HERCULES" wall hangers, Haven't had a bit of problems. They are a little pricey tho, about $10-15 apiece |

Location: East Tennessee | +1 on the Hercules. In the summer humidity is not a problem down here.
Good idea to get a humidity gage and check it. |

If the guitar isn't in my hand it's in the case - I expect that's why my 74 is pretty much mint condition even though it's been played a fair bit - same with my other guitars. |

I wouldn't even consider using them - accidents waiting to happen; but that's just my opinion.
If the guitar isn't in my hand it's in the case - I expect that's why my 74 is pretty much mint condition even though it's been played a fair bit - same with my other guitars. I agree: it takes a couple of seconds to open a case and only a second for a guitar to hit the floor/etc. BUT: to each their own...

Location: SoCal | I initially installed Off The Wall hangers. Their cradles come in standard and wide widths. The cradles are swappable, which makes rearranging easier...
but the added security offered by the Hercules hangers was worth the switch...
If you can't hit the wall studs when you mount your hangers, screw your hangers to a backing board which is screwed to the studs. |

I came into the music room after being away on a 3 day trip to find a 1778LX face up in the middle of the floor, a 1778T-RF laying on the floor in a soft gig bag, and a mandolin laying on the floor in a gig bag.
Strangely, the girls are as paranoid as any of us about their guitars, but they don't think about things like a dog barreling into the room and landing on a guitar, or one of them stumbling and stepping onto something breakable.
Even after discussing it with them, I found a guitar in the middle of the floor while one of the girls went out to get a snack.
My hope is that they will use a floor stand or wall stand if it is right there. |

Location: SoCal | My kids are now 16 and 14. We've had two dogs forever, it seems, and I've never had a guitar accident from the dogs or kids. All my guitars are either on stands or on the walls.
The only guitar accident was when the winds blew out a window, knocking the 87C face down onto a hardwood floor. And it went to the factory and is as good (if not better) than new. And with the window replaced also, the 87C is back on it's stand in it's original spot.
Man, they're only guitars. Don't be paranoid about them. Anything you can bust up, the factory can fix. We're willing to send our teenagers out in cars to slice and dice on the highways but aren't willing to put guitars out on stands?
Where's the sense of piorities there? |

Location: Phoenix AZ | The answer to the question depends on what your threshold for safety is. Is the safest place for a guitar in it's case? I don't know, I've kicked over cases but I've never kicked over a wall. Hell, why not lock the case in a gun safe? But you need to be practical as well and find the best compromise FOR YOU of practical vs. safe. For me cases are out of the question. A guitar in it's case will never ever get played. And the logistics issue of where do you keep 3-4 dozen cases accessible is impossible to solve. For me it's hangers and stands. Ironically the only guitar I ever had stolen out of my house was one that was laying around in it's case, not one hanging on the wall. Dave |

The guitars that I put in the cases are the ones that I eventually decide to sell. The ones on the walls and the stands get played
Of course, my kids are grown and I have no pets so if anything gets damaged, I only have myself to blame. |

Something catches on something and boom goes the dynamite. I just got to remember to take... my... time. |

My problem is not quite as large as yours... But I can relate :rolleyes:
When I started having to label the cases I knew I was in trouble...
It meant either too many guitars, or Alzheimer's, or Both. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | And the irony is that in struggling to get to the right guitar case you're gonna knock over a guitar that's on a stand, or knock over a mic into a guitar. Cases are made for transportation, not storage. I mean, you wouldn't keep your clothes in a suitcase would you? Everyone needs to decide what works best for THEM.

Location: SoCal | You know, I've never even thought to label a case. I've got unique cases for my Glen Campbell Deluxe Balladeer and for my OFC slothead (ding!). If I'm taking out other guitars, I tend to use the case that the OFC came in 'cause I like the padded handle.
When I've sold guitars, I tend to send them out in the oldest cases I've got, just to get rid of them.
Some time in the next year or so, I may send a guitar back to have some work done on it, at which time, I'll send it in the oldest case I can and buy a new modern case for it to come back in.

Location: South of most, North of few | If you use Herc hangers, and anchor them to the wall correctly, and pay half attention when putting them on the hanger, there shouldn't be an issue with damage from falling. Now if you hang them low enough for the kids to start swinging them back and forth, that's another issue. |
