Almost always. If an individual isn't familiar with an guitar and it's one of my pricey guitars I wouldn't take a chance on it.

Unless they just got through stuffing greasy chicken or pizza in their mouth.

I actually tend to send mine hundreds and hundreds of miles away for surprise visits.

It depends on the person. I know a guy who beats on guitars, and I won't let him use a pick. He scratched the daylights out of one of my guitars once. There is another guy who I had to stop in the middle of a song for the same reason. And there is a woman in this town who actually played so hard on my friend's resonator guitar at a party one night that all the screws came loose. Then she said "This guitar sounds like crap, let me borrow yours". At that point I put my guitar in the case and said I was just leaving.

Down here at the shop, I have to put up with people trying the guitars, and I cringe when they pull out a pick. I've had people grab them off the rack and smash them into the guitar next to it. I've had people grab bass guitars and plug them into guitar amps, or electric guitars plugged into acoustic amps. When it's not busy, I can keep an eye on them, but sometimes it gets pretty crazy in here and I can't watch them all. I have signs up, but no one pays attention. What's even worse is when people come in with their little kids and don't watch them. They start grabbing everything, and when I say "No Honey, you might break it.", the parents act like nothing happened. Don't get me wrong, I love what I'm doing, but when I have a nervous breakdown, CUSTOMERS will be the reason.

One of my friends plays guitar very well, so when he comes over I'll have him play my guitars plugged and unplugged. It's a great way to stand back and face the guitars and equipment and hear what they sound like from that perspective. Of course he plays much better than me, so really I'm just fooling myself !!

Absolutely! As long as the player isn't drunk, greased fingered or a Taylor player, have at it! It sometimes gives me the opportunity to see what my gits are capable of...

CS,

I couldn't survive in that atmosphere!

Exactly, CA. Right now I'm doing a short term swap with CrimsonLake. I hope he plays mine half as much as I play his, and I hope he wears his Depends while doing it.

I let Gway play almost every one when I get it in. I trust him. Between TR boy and Beggin, they seem to become enamored with any guitar I show up with, and I trust them too. Anyone I've met in the OFC family, I trust too. But,I had a "friend" come over once, said, "oh, you have guitars?" so I gave him my BCB LX to play. It was like seeing your girlfriend get beat up. This guy just beat the livin' shite out of it. That was the LAST time he's been in my house. Thank God the guitar made it through without too much damage.

Trader Jim always lets other people play his guitars. He just sells them first.
