One of her artist friends had mentioned that her husband was heavily involved in guitar theory and is a teacher and that he would like to bring a guitar over and jam a bit with me.He came over with a left handed Guild acoustic .He was admiring my guitars and I said its to bad that he was a lefty because I wanted to hear him play my guitars. He said thats no problem and grabs my Adamas 12 string and starts plucking away right handed.I stood in awe at the talent of this guy and then he says play something and I will follow you, I pooped myself for a minute thinking this is like a Frank Zappa asking a first grader to play with him.It all was good and we played for a couple of hours with a great audience.I havent played in front of a group of people for over 35 years , it was great. Its amazing that someone can play a guitar with the strings on righthanded or lefthanded.Just for SH%TS & Giggles I had to pick up his lefty and try to play it.IMPOSSIBLE for me to do. It boggles my mind how anyone could do that. Are their any famous guitar players that you know that can do that? Can anyone here play both ways??? :( I MEAN GUITAR :( . GWB.

It was hilarious! Some of us did OK with D and A, but C was a real toughie. As a finger-picker, my nails got in the way, but I could see that if anything ever happened to my left hand, it would be possible to learn to chord and strum with a hook if need be. I often get kids in who are left-handed, wanting to buy a guitar and take lessons. I encourage them to start out right-handed. They have such a larger choice in guitars, they don't have to pay an extra hundred bucks, and if they aren't already used to playing left-handed, there is really no difference, (except that I have to admit that lefties seem to have more talent. Jarrett Weimer, my super-kid who is the best young guitarist I have ever met in 36 years of teaching is one of them.)

So he switched and became so proficient with his left that he eventually had a shot at the bigs. Can't remember the name, but the story was great. Having done a bit of magic (in addition to guitar playing) in my youth, I also have high respect for people who can 'perform' equally with both hands. I've tried time and time again to palm coins in my left hand and it just ain't a-gonna happen. LOL Additional meaningless tidbit — I work in publishing and the only triple-redundancy I've seen in 30 years was in a story describing a jockey who, it noted, "was equally ambidextrous with both hands."

I believe the guy at Apple Music told me that the only guitars that don't cost more for lefties are Larrivee's, cuz the owner/designer/whomever is Left-handed. (correct me if I am wrong) But back to ambidextrous... There is always this guy... But I don't know if this counts, or it's just a little gimmick.

Think about it...your left hand is your "smart" hand, so it would follow that doing the complicated stuff that our left hands do, while our right hands do the easy part would make you better guitarists than us righties. My sister is left handed, and she's incredibly talented. I know you've had to go through life pinching your hand on the scissors and smearing ink on the page, but I'm still jealous.

I did everything I could to tell them to learn to play righty, but to no avail. Being left handed, I've always thought that if I had any talent (which I don't), that having my left hand on the fingerboard is the best thing.....

I guess in one sense, then, I am ambidextrous--just not in a very beneficial way. :D ;) --Karen

Joined: January 2002 Posts: 14127 Location: 6 String Ranch | there was this guy, Michael Angelo (The one on Old Man Aurther's link) he called himself and he used to play at the washburn booth on a double neck v, necks set out from each other and he'd do all that hammer on widdley widdley stuff with both hands at the same time. Very impressive, but so what?
