And the last one is very pretty. This time I got the second last. It was a tough choice between the 2, so I basically just went with the lower number. #10, the only one left, has a beautiful flame maple type look to it.

Good luck Al. I'd love it, but I don't have anywhere near the bucks. It'll be strictly 3-figure purchases for me for quite a while I think. Oh well.

The koa 12-fret and U12 are unique animals that I would buy in a heartbeat... oh, I already did :)

These guitars are very usable flavors that you will not find in any other O or A. Someone (or two) should seriously consider grabbing these before they are gone forever. Al put himself out and made 12 of each and passed on to us a healthy price way below that attainable on an individual custom order.

Grab these now, you will thank Al later.

Noah, good to hear from you. Nice guitar there by the way, I thought these were gone! Somebody is going to get a great guitar. One of the super rare ones that everyone wants to try and you end up with free cashews after the jam!

Between the original and the 12's and 14's there are only 25 made.

That's rare enough. thank Al now, and later.

Okay, so here's a question...with the 12-fret setup, Koa top, and wider nut/slothead, in the opinions of those who own them is this guitar a better 'picker or strummer? How much heavy rhythm playing can it handle without sacrificing its true potential?

I realize I may be signing my own death warrant with SWMBO, but you know...

Al, since you obviously have both, how much difference is there sound-wise between the 12's and the 14's?

Andrew, I personally find it to be a great picking guitar. It has a sweet, woody tone to it that really lends itself well to finger or flat picking. Strumming is fine, but the top (at least on mine) doesn't seem to respond well to HARD rhythm strumming.

It's almost like it has a feminine personality, it likes to be played gently or with just a bit of firmness, but not harshly.
As opposed to a 1581, which seems to open up more the harder you play it.

I am a picker and I think it is excellent. If I was to just strum with it, then I would put on bigger stings. It has a darker sound to my ears, but by itself, nobody would ever notice. One thing for absolute sure, they'll notice the guitar. The wider neck is something that I only began to appreciate over the past two years with this model and the EF75.

You guys are evil...the more I try to talk myself out of it, the more I want one.

You know, all my GAS problems are Woody's fault...when I met him, I actually had ONE guitar...

Just go for one of each, Andrew. That's a good compromise.

You want the last 12 fretter for now...

Then Al can start planning for the Longnecks.

Be thankful I didn't convert Todd to the darkside or he'd be living at your house now...

I was just considering the fine market skills that Alpep has been %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Dave,
This is your Subconcious talking to you. You must listen.
Tell Woody to send his 12 string to Cliff.
Tell Al to send the last Koalava 12 to Cliff.
Al has your Credit card, ask him to send an 08 Collector's to Woody.
Tell Moody to bite you.

Woody, I wrote about 4 cute responses to your post, but erased them prior to hitting the ADD REPLY key. In all seriousness, listen to me even though this is something you do NOT want to hear ...

You are in the same boat that I (and others) are in with custom order guitars. That is, you will never ever come close to selling it and recouping what you put into it. Sorry but that's the hard truth. I've got a few $2500. guitars that I couldn't get $1000. for. Unfortunately that's just the way it goes. With highly customized guitars, if someone is going to pay you what it is really worth they would be better off to have their own built with exactly their personal design specs.

Case in point, your 12-string. Great guitar for sure. But I don't like the bearclaw look. If it was normal sitka or sunburst I would have bought it from you a year ago, no questions asked. But if I'm going to drop that kind of coin I'm better off to get exactly what I want.

My advice, painful as it may be and trust be I have had to do this on several occasions, if you really have no need for the 12-string and want something else like an 08C, cut your loses and unload the 12-er for whatever you can and move on. It'll hurt, but only until you get your next guitar.

Dave

Ditto what Dave said. I typically place a higher value on a guitar just because it is mine so I know it is high end quality!

I am temporarily insane and thinking I might trade in my Collings D2SHMha that has all sorts of custom features for a Bourgeois that is calling my name.

The only reason I haven't pulled the trigger is that I hate to take a loss on an incredible playing and sounding guitar. I would obviously recoup more of my cost by selling it outright but the guitar I am Gassing over might be gone by then.

If I were in your shoes, I would just call Al and trade him for the guitar you want. Like Dave said, it will only hurt until the new one arrives.

Go for it!

Stephen selling one of his Collings? Yet some more crumbs falling off his table? Yummy!

I appreciate Dave's post. I'm not in the guitar business so making money on a guitar or other related piece of gear has never been a consideration. This is particularly true for the custom orders. That said, the customs and special limited editions are my favorites. It is a nice feeling to own a one-off guitar that was made to your specs just for you. This probably applies to anything else that is custom-made (bikes, cars, guns, houses, birdhouses, etc.).

Brad, don't think I didn't think of you but it is acoustic only so I knew the interest (regardless of how awesome it sounds) would be minimal.

Here's a Koa 12 fret that I am gassing over!

You should have kept you EF417 and go put the rest of the money in the stock market. It's BUY time.

Thanks Dave,

Does this mean that you aren't going to tell Moody to Bite you?

Point taken. The only reason I even have the C12LXCBCS up for sale is because there are several customs going for about $1000 that are worth a lot more.

I have been GAS'n for an Adamas cutaway six string with textured toppings. Black, Red or Brown preferred.

Woody,

There is a 2008 Collector close enough to you that you might want to come over and check it out.

It appears to be a keeper however, so you can't take it home with you.
