I'm not sure what their strategy is by doing that. There weren't that many Ovation Custom Legends, etc. on Ebay a few nights ago.

So if anyone here is in the 'hunt', LMK. I'll check it out fer ya. Otherwise, I'll save some ga$ (as in petrol). He's located in Englewood, south of Sarasota. If ya want me to check it out, PM or email me.

In a healthy economy, that guitar should go for almost 3 times that. $800 is still awfully cheap for a guitar that can dance with other guitars costing 3 times that. It's a sign of the times we live in.....

These Custom Legends are the finest of the fine... The Carved bridge and TRC along with the Abalone inlays are the crowning touches on fantastic playing and sounding guitars...nice examples rarely come up so they can and do command whatever someone is willing to pay... Well worth it at three times the price...

Joined: May 2009 Posts: 1433 Location: Right now? | I looked at that guitar, but did anyone notice that there is a rather large mark, possibly disguised as a superficial 'smudge', or whatever, right near where the heel meets the body? Please, guys, give me your input on that thang, because I'm a bit interested, but that is a LOT of money for me! Also, the seller wrote and told me that the 'smudge' on the front near the waist is a spot that was "scraped down to the wood" and "repaired (by whom he did not say) with laquer". Important stuff to consider, no? You guys would know better than me, fer sure! Thanks for your help. ;) Willa

I don' know much about Ovations, but it seems that they are known to have neck issues? I just bought a custom legend and I love the guitar, but I know nothing about these, really. Again, any input is appreciated. ;) Willa

I know it's a great guitar; that is why I was interested, but there are a lot of 'friends' on this forum, and no one made mention of the things I pointed out. I did ask for more photos, and believe me, that 'smudge' on the front looks a LOT worse in the higher resolution photos. But you can hardly see them in the photos accompanying the listing. It's VERY significant and frankly, is scaring ME away. As for the heel 'mark', fortunately, the higher res photos show that there is no mark, but rather just a reflection of light that showed up on that particular photo. Again, as for that scrape on the front of the guitar near the waist, well, the higher resolution photo shows a pretty bad and cosmetically significant mar, which even suggests some splintering. Decisions, decisions.

Type this into your address bar if it doesn't show up as a link: http://www.pbase.com/image/113327688 The seller has been more than gracious with providing me with any information I have asked about. I do not mean to imply that he is being evasive or dishonest in his description in any way, shape or form. I just figured I would ask you guys, because after all, you would know whether or not to invest in this guitar. Thanks again.

Joined: November 2006 Posts: 3969 | Hi WillaMuse - That higher quality photo does show more damage than does the listing photo, so I'm glad to see you taking a critical look at this. If the top itself is damaged, that would be a red flag for me at the current price. A misguided "repair" to a finish-only mar wouldn't affect the tonal qualities or structural integrity of this guitar and so wouldn't matter as much. I was able to find a slightly newer model in burst after waiting for a couple of years for one to show up. It came with fully disclosed cosmetic damage that was acceptable to me for the price, since I knew that they could be made new by the Wizards at the factory (which indeed they did): ![]() These are great guitars in both sound and looks, and rarely come up for sale at any price. The vintage and gold label makes it even more desirable to a knowledgeable Ovation fan/collector. If you're serious about it, contact 2ifbyC (he posted above). He's in the area and I'm sure he could examine it for you and give you a true indication of it's condition. Keep us posted.

Joined: May 2009 Posts: 1433 Location: Right now? | Thanks, G8r. My, my that guitar of yours sure is PURTY! I took your advice and sent 2ifbyC the high res photo. Sigh. It's SOOO pretty! I'm sure it sounds good too. I also noticed that there is a distinct crease at the top of the bowl, which looked a bit weird to me. I asked the seller if the guitar had ever been dropped and his reply was "Frankly, I have no idea whether this 32 year old guitar has ever been dropped." An honest answer fer sure, but not helpful to yours truly, I'm afraid. I'm sure the seller thinks I'm a psycho, because I've as him at least a dozen questions. Hey! I'm on a budget here! :p I'm thinkin' about it, I'm thinkin' about it ...

Joined: December 2006 Posts: 6268 Location: Florida Central Gulf Coast | First of all, it took me a while to 'break' the $600 barrier for a less than perfect Ovation. But after listening to and learning from my 'O elders' here, I now have a few. So caution and mature advice are prudent 'tools'. Keep in mind that Willa has received mixed signals here thus far. Let's see if this pic garners more decisive 'O'pinions: ![]() Willa, I'll be glad to check it out if you're still interested after our member's inputs. I honestly probably won't be able to add much info, but it won't hurt to inspect it. So ladies and gents, let's hear your opinions of the 'issue' in the close up pic...

I wouldn't touch her except to play her; Afterall, who's perfect? :p If you have NOTHING ELSE TO DO, and are totally bored, for you to have a look at her would be wonderful, although I don't think it's necessary. Again, if you're really bored! ;) Anyway, I have a bit of an affinity for less-than-perfect 'things' in general, haha. I just wanted to know if that damage significantly reduces her worth ... in the event that I have to sell the house or something awful. And I knew you guys would have the magic answers ... maybe ... She sure is a pretty one. I love the CLs. !

Yes, but not at that price. But that's me and besides, I already have a CL. What Serge and I are so surprised about was the rapid jump in bid$ within just a couple of hours! Hopefully I can check it out before the weekend. I'll take a dental mirror and pen light to insure there isn't inside 'damage' through the wood. BTW, we both could be in trouble if I find a GAS git in the store! :p OK, everybody else jump in...
