Hello,

My name is Kathy and I plan on selling my husbands 1972 Ovation Ballader Model #1111-4 Serial #001993 and the case. He died 7 years ago at age 53 and I promised him I'd sell his guitars. I haven't wanted to and it's taken me all this time to get around to doing it and I'm starting with the Ovation.

My first steps have been to check Ebay for prices and to look at a few on line appraisal sites. I submitted pictures to a site for a 'free appraisal'(still pending) and was wondering if the community here has ever used any of the online appraisal sites and if so, if you would be willing to provide me with any feedback about your experiece with them (without endorcing them of course, don't want to violate any TOS).

Thank you. Kathy (PS: To clarify, I am not asking that anyone here provide me with an estimate of value for my guitar as I know you cannot do that, I am merely asking if you have had any experience with any of the online appraisals and if so, what was your experience)

Kathy,

Welcome to the Ovation Family. I sorry to hear of your dear loss!

I've never used an on line appraisal site. Doubt I ever will.

Recent eBay sales will give you the best idea of what the market is bearing.

Post some pics here, describe its condition and post an optimistic, but realistic, price. The family here will aid you in determining what you have and it's most probable worth.

Good luck and best wishes!

Welcome Kathy!

If you are comfortable with Ebay you can run a seven day auction that concludes at about 5-7pm on a Sunday, start bidding at $1 but set your Reserve at an amount you are comfortable with.

Good pictures, no exageration and identify any damage.
This way the "market" sets the value.

If you aren't comfortable with Ebay or packaging and shipping instruments maybe you can locate a friend or someone nearby that can assist you.

I have done this for others before and it isn't very hard, just intimidating if you haven't done it before.

But good pictures are the way to start!

Let me know if I can help.

By the Way - that serial number sounds like it was made between Summer of 1968 to early 1969 and should have some of the total-Ovation-Geek members here having to wipe the drewl off of their faces...

Thank you both for your replies. I will post some photos. Unfortunately it has some knicks on it, not sure how they happened. And I thought the serial # made it 1972 but if you think it's 68-69, it'd sure make a difference when I post it for sale. I looked around and found this:

three digit series (number range) year made comment
006-319 1966 Three digits in red ink
320-999 1967 (Feb-Nov) New Hartford; three digits in red ink
1000- 1967 (Nov)-1968 (July) Four digits in black ink, no letter prefix
10000- 1970 (Feb)-1972 (May) Five digits, no letter prefix
A+3 Digits 1968 (July-Nov)
B+3 Digits 1968 (Nov)-1969 (Feb)
B+5 Digits 1974-1979 Magnum solid body basses
C+3 Digits 1969 (Feb-Sept)
D+3 Digits 1969 (Sept)-1970 (Feb)
E+4 Digits 1973 (Jan)-1975 (Feb) Solidbodies
E+5 Digits 1975 (Feb)-1980 Solidbodies
E+6 Digits 1980 (late)-1981 Some UK IIs (does not reflect production)
F,G prefix 1968 (July)-1970 (Feb)
H,I,J,L prefix 1970-1973 Electric Storm Series

Then on a website I entered in the serial # and it said 1972 so I'm a bit confused.

I'll post some pictures in another reply.

Thanks for your help and suggestions!!

go to your 1111-4 Album, hit edit album and drag them to your album.

The main or "media" page shows latest activity for any public images.

not a big deal.

My bad
I read that as "1993" and missed the Six Digit from 1972 onward.

It's not been cleaned as you can see. Are their any other recommended pic's that you think I should take or re-take? Should I have it cleaned up first? Re=strung etc?

Thanks again!

Kathy, best of luck with the sale. As I'm sure you know now, Ovations in general don't get much respect except for here, and right now is not a good time to sell anything. That said, I think that is a beautiful guitar, and wish you the best. If you could afford to hold on to it for a while, you might do better down the road.

I wasn't aware of that My Guitars. There is a rather active Ebay 'reserve' bidding going on for an Ovation now. I'm watching it closely. I really don't want to go that way as I have no experience. In a perfect world it'd be someone local that could hold her and touch her and appreciate her as my husband did. He wants me to sell all the guitars not because of the money but because he wants them to be played. His biggest fear is that they would sit around and collect dust. "They must be played Kathy" he would tell me. "Sell them". So I must sell. I know the economy is bad, but I also know the artists heart. I used to call the guitars his Mistresses. But hey, at least I knew where he was at night! LOL.

TJ has probably owned most of those at one time or another, some twice!

They're not all Ovations. But he sure has provided many quality gits for the rest of us. His guitar 'room' has a revolving door! Ergo, our infamous 'Trader Jim'...

Kathy,
That's just beautiful.

Makes me wonder what will happen to my guitars once I'm gone.

I've already asked Moody about coming up here to sell off my guitars, take my shirts and console my wife once I'm gone.
The thing is he HAS to wait until I'm gone!

Kathy, consider sending them to me to clean up and sell for you. There are several OFCers close enough to me to rough me up if I need it!

(imagining a line forming already)

I noticed the tuners aren't original on the Balladeer and I'm a little curious about the other guitars you may have.
I'm not in it for the money as others will attest I usually buy high and sell low.

I like the idea of keeping them played and not locked in a museum.

Kathy,

Mike is a good guy (MWoody)and he will do you right with no worries on your part. I know that is a leap of faith on your part, dealing with a bunch of internet zanies you have never met, but that is what makes this group great.

If you want to get the fairest and best price for your guitars, let Mike handle it if you are unsure about dealing with Ebay on your own. Check out some of his auctions on Ebay. He knows how to present your guitar in the best possible light and max the return.
