Yeah, I know ... Breadwinner, Ukulele, rosewood backed wooden box, blah, blah, blah.
But let's be realistic here just for the fun of it. It needs to be a guitar that's reasonably associated with the Ovation theme and tradition. Something that's able to be manufactured with mostly existing materials, tooling and factory skills, etc. So what would it be?

Basically a black Al Dimeola Contour Bowl. BUT, you cut the contour bowl down into a "supershallow" type of depth. Stuff in a VIP-5 with some new modelled voices and tag it at $2299. You tout it as the ultimate on stage a/e guitar.
My reasons for picking this design are the following:
1. Introduces something radially new - the shallow contour bowl. But mixes it with a very classic Ovation design (the black AD with abalone trim).
2. Reinforces Ovations "plugged in" theme. They have gone to great lengths with the LX, adamas special editions, etc. to promote the pure acoustic sound (thank you) but let's not forget the areana where Ovation once lead the industry - plugged in.
3. It's been 2005 since they did a round center hole collector and 2004 since they did an abalone trimmed one. So time to do something different than the tired old elite style.
4. Thinking about it, tweaking the contour bowl into a shallow design would be really good in my opinion. The old supershallw roundback was the worst one in my opinion for slipping off peoples legs when playing seated. SCB would solve that. Also, the old SSB didn't leave much room for the electroncs package and you had to mount the xlr board/jack pointed o the rear. SCB solves that.
5. I don't think they've ever done a BLACK collectors guitar. Some won't like it. But why not do it, they've every other damn color. And maybe the black will appeal to more of the younger crowd. Plus who can say abalone on black isn't stunning.
6. Technically I would think that retooling the Contour Bowl into a shallow design would not be a major deal. A day at the design table (computer), bang out a few plastic or cardboard models, make sure the neck pocket works, and spec it out to the supplier. There might be some tooling mods needed in the factory (the binding glue machine comes to mind) and maybe some of the bowl holders in the spray booths, but it's all doable.
7. As with the history of many prevous collectors editions, this one could launch a permanent feature for the future Ovation lines - the Shallow Contour Bowl.
So that's my suggestion. And YES this is a guitar that I would buy. Um, serial no. 001 please ?

And I'm intrigued by the resonator. Can't wait to talk about it with them on the tour. |

Contour bowl, 1 3/4" nut,(Jeff beat me to that), Slothead,Sunburst finish, bass side epaulets, two knobber Tone/Volume controls. and just to make things interesting, 13 frets to the body.
Santa Cruz does a 13 fret model played one awesome. Best of both worlds. |

Location: the BIG Metropolis of TR | My '09 Collector would start out as basically a (older 12 fret configuration) Folklore in Custom Legend trim.....with these exceptions/mods.....
(1) Take the finest grade, close straight grained, AAA+ grade sitka spruce top and wipe it down with potassium dichromate, let it sit, sand it back, then stain it with the brightest, fire engine, cherry bomb hot, bloodiest rich, RED dye possible!! The dye will allow the pottasium dichromate enhanced grain to show through!
(kinda like this or this ...with closer grain of course)
(2) Do the Custom Legend trim package, but in the purest, whitest, Mother Of Pearl to be found.
Inlay the (wide style) rosette.
(3) Carved walnut bridge and TRC....
(4) Ebony fretboard....
(5) Straight grained walnut (maybe ebony) peghead overlay....on an older style slothead!! (I don't particularly like the new shaped pegheads....there was nothing wrong with the original slotted heads...I believe they just changed for change's sake....)
(6) Traditional 5pc neck....
(7) Chrome tuners with pearloid (mother of toilet seat) buttons....
(8) No electronics (unless maybe the direct out like the FD14's)
(9) No "09" inlay at the 12th fret....
(10) Finish everything in that beautiful, bullet proof, rock hard, gloss polyurethane....
(11) And lastly....Classic foil label (you can "tastefully" place '09 Collector somewhere on the label!)
SO....Except for top color and MOP trim...pretty much like I said "A Folklore w/Custom Legend trim! :cool:

Location: Chehalis, Washington | A new version of the '97 Parlor...only in wide-neck with a sinker redwood top and a off-set blowhole. Add in a Studio preamp (sorry VIP guys) or make it acoustic-only.
Or, to do something REALLY crazy, why not add in features that some of the high-end private luthiers use, such as a side bevel and a side soundport. Maybe try texturing the bowl material to resemble Brazilian rosewood, or striped ebony...a roundback version of a wood-box!
I like Dave's idea for a Shallow Contour Bowl...I'd buy that for sure. |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | Being a SSB fan myself, I, too, like Dave's suggestion, except I would prefer the MEII pearl white instead of the black, and I also wouldn't care if it was a modified contour back or just a regular SSB. A SSB 14 fret cutaway in a center hole configuration would be appealing. Isn't the MEII a mid-bowl? |
