Location: Bluffton, SC | His guitar does fill a room...is the Lowden the only acoustic he plays, Jeff? Could have been the top notch sound system in the Ithaca aud when I saw him last year but it was fantastic.

He exclusively plays the Lowden on stage. ( He has a couple of other makers that he will use to write and record, including an older Martin). He's used the same Lowden for more than 20 years and only just recently started with a new one, having worn the old one through.... |

Location: ms | I`m sorry guys and I love Richard but his live sound is really not very good, at least what i`ve heard. His playing is great but he uses a Sunrise p/u and i think another p/u mixed and its just not a very acoustic sound. |

Ronnie, I think the sound at the venue must have sucked instead of the guitar. |

| I saw a Fairport lineup in or about 1985 which included Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg, David Swarbrick and I think it was Dave Mattacks on drums.
Fairport opened for Steeleye Span. It was a small theater in Toronto and the sound was excellent - the harmonies sounded like the recorded versions.
Some of the guys from Fairport did a rhythm piece where they tore up newspapers in time - strange, never seen anyone do that since; they also came out during the Steeleye concert dressed as monks and mooned the audience in the middle of Gaudete which is a complex harmony sung in Latin..lol |

| I struggle to believe that Fairport Convention opened for any other folk group on the planet at that time. In the UK Steeleye would have been honoured to roadie for Fairport.
Might explain the mooning tho. |

I was reading something by Dave Pegg a few weeks ago where he said that playing with both bands on tour was exhausting and that when it was all over Fairport made nothing on the tour.
Tull played here with Procol Harum quite awhile back - that's another one that I'd like to have seen. |

I was talking to Rick Kemp in the lobby before everyone went in and he said they were heading back to England next. The onstage antics from Fairport during the Steeleye set had something to do with having reached the end of the tour.
Fairport disbanded in 1979 and reformed as a full-time band in 1985 so they hadn't been up to much until then; accordingly, it's not that unusual for them to have hooked up with Steeleye Span who were engaged in a world tour at the time - they were flogging shirts and jackets with "Steeleye Span World Wide in 85" written on them - whatever that meant.
In any event, it's a minor point which has perhaps consumed more band width than necessary but you elected to take issue with it so a response of some kind seemed appropriate. |

I'm serious. Mid depth bowl for comfort, 1 3/4" neck, great acoustic sound and great plugged in sound. Road worthy. Something like that would be perfect for him..... |
