This is one I personally have not seen before... A Viper Deluxe (I wonder how many of THESE were made?):

Definitely looked like someone hotrodded their Viper with some bling and gold pieces, but that didn't come from the factory. Besides, the Deluxe has those really nice abalone inlays on the fretboard. ;)

There never was a "Viper Deluxe". Somebody tweaked a Viper. Aren't those Gretsch p/u's?

Gee Vince... For some reason I could not get your link to work.
But I found the guitar anyway.
I saw that earlier... My thoughts were that it needs a TRC and it has too many knobs!
Otherwise it looks pretty good.

And to anybody else who had trouble with the link... Try This One!

Definitely a project. Not the bridge angle adjustment hole on the back, yet it has a Schaller bridge. Overall it's pretty cool looking, just needs a wood pickguard to be perfect.

Miles,

You seem to have a smidgen of appreciation for some of these recent 'mavericks'. May I ask what's your POV on 'em? Is it the config, 'O' parts, or sumpin' else?

I have always appreciated when someone puts their own signature on something, and spends a bit of time "finishing" the instrument not just stopping at a fix for something that's broke. This Viper in point. They didn't set out to "restore" a Viper from the parts bin. Ok, maybe that was the intention, but there is a theme, and it's not just hacked together.

I have a VXT that Woody did. I love it. All he really did was put a top on it, and give it a sunburst. But it's not a nice shiny smooth finish, it looks antique. It looks like a 40+ year old guitar minus the wear, but under the hood... brand new, state-of-the-art VXT. It hasn't been IN its case even once since I brought it home, and it's the only one like it on planet earth.

The other aspect is that it can't just be eye-candy. No matter how bizarre, it should be playable.

The gotcha for me on some of these is the "mystery" part. That Tiesco looking guitar with the Ovation neck. Obviously not made by Ovation, but it "made'ya look". I recently had on consignment a similar era SG copy of sorts... but it was built a lot better than it should have been. It had better parts, better pickups, quality tuners, etc... no name on it. It was all original to the best I could tell, and no idea where it came from or who made it.

Some others that just work for me in the Ovation theme... Wood topped UK-II. An UltraGS that's actually a one-piece body in sunburst. Bill's Prototype PF-22 where the body is carved differently and it has UKII pickups. I'm sure there are others. I actually have a Black'n Gold Themed Viper that has a Urelite body. Actually I may have two of those??

There are plenty of non-Ovations I have had like the SG I mentioned, but most of them don't have names so I could only reference with pictures if I still had them.

Those Gretsch or TV Jones minis are probably the closest replacement for the Viper pups as well.

The Gold trim must have come from a Preacher Deluxe. Not a bad theme.

Miles,

Thanx for your excellent insight for those such as myself that can't tell the diff twix HBs and single wounds or such on sight. Admittedly and obviously, I'm not a 'productive user' of guitars. I just love 'em; especially 'O' & 'A's!

The more git knowledge I get, the more I realize how much I'm in the dark. Again, thanx to you and the other knowledgeable OFC members, I'm never bored here!

Anything is possible Slydog. Over the years I have bought and sold so many guitars and parts that it would be impossible to track. I have in fact been elated at "deals" I have found on eBay, only to realize when it arrived that I already owned the guitar once in its history. That has happened at least twice that I am aware of, and likely a couple of times I wasn't aware of. Just a few weeks ago I opened up an "empty case" from storage, that had a guitar body in it !!!!
