Cheeky bastards have the G-band in there as on "oddity" Their conclusion that, and I quote "With one of these you could tune to drop D and then easily un-drop it." shows that they've missed the point completely.

That guitar is hardlty an oddity. It's a Zemaitis replica and Zemiatis have a fanatical following. Some of the replicas on display had retail prices of around $20K

I was was looking at some of the guitars at the Zemaitis booth . . . very nice.

Although the picture doesn't really do it justice, that "MadProfessor" amp is absolute TITS!! Not at all gig-worthy, but a GREAT piece of music room eye-candy. (Did you see that, Bill?)

Ibanez also had a couple of electrics based on H.R. Giger designs that were really cool. I'll post a couple pics when I get a chance . . .

The (back to back)doubleneck guitar isn't that odd/new either.....Tom Bresh plays a back to back called a "Dualette (now a Super Dualette) by guitar builder Del Langejans with inlays by Bob Malda of Bob's Custom Inlays(who luthier444 endorses)

I actually nicked the drop D idea from thier promo materials that I picked up at the show. I'm open to input on the text.

The Oddities are as much about unique items as they are about oddball items. The fact that I'd never heard of Zemiatas guitars and their striking appearance made them a natural for the pages.

Ibanez had those there last year.

Welcome to the board Barry. Showing some stones too. Good for you.

...I'd duck if Paul comes back round. He's just plain mean.

Maybe he could help Jeff W's U681T back from Schroder. Nah, he'd just keep it for himself....

I work as a consultant for G-band and I'm the guy who did the demos at NAMM and on the website. Returning a dropped D back to E is a not a purpose for which it was either designed for or is suitable for. Mostly because in the 1st to 4th positions the G-band would just be in the way if you're playing open chords. This application was actually suggested by a UK guitar mag about 4 years ago and used on early G-band promo before I got involved and pointed out that it was bollocks. I thought I'd gotten rid of those leaflets, if not I apologise that you were given a bum steer.

I don't mean to be confrontational or contrary but the G-band was in development for several years and we spent a fortune trying to get the point accross at NAMM. A point which, at the risk of being repetitive, you have missed completely. A one-trick-pony it ain't and please do not distill print material down to such. I suggest you log on to the G-band website, watch my demo, read the G-band video thread on this site, and maybe you'll see why we have distributors worldwide who don't see the thing as an "oddity"

Never heard of Zemaitis!!!! Puhleeese! Guitars of choice for the likes of Ronnie Wood, Clapton, George Harrison, James Honeyman Scott, and many others. Tony Zemaitis is a legend (although IMHO the replicas are shitloads better than his originals)
This is a perfect example of why the intenet can be a dangerous place. Anyone with a PC and a phoneline can appear to an "expert".

Paul, Just remember ANY free publicity is GOOD publicity. Just ask Jeffery Dahmer or Pee Wee Herman. OK, maybe those aren't the best examples.

I first saw your proto G-band last year and you gave me one to try out. Honestly in the whole year since I've never once thought about using it to retune drop D to normal. Seems like such a waste of use compared to what the thing was designed for and what almost endless possibilities it opens up and down the fretboard. The only "odd" point is that nobody ever thought about it sooner and that it changes our concept of fingerings a bit. To many guitarits this "oddity" will no doubt soon become a necessary part of their regular arsenal.

Paul,
I expanded the G-Band paragraph a bit on the site. I have limited space to talk about each product so that's one of the reasons I include full contact information and web links.

If you still think that my G-Band entry on the page is disparaging have someone from the company ask me to pull it off the site. Today alone there have be 21k+ page hits so I expect the G-Band has been exposed to one or two new potential buyers.

Every year at NAMM I make a point to say hi to people at the small companies whom I'm covered in years past. Every single one of them has been thrilled that I put them on the site and it's makes me very happy to see that these companies are thriving and have made it to another NAMM.

And as for Zamaitas, I appear to have a Zemaitas-shaped hole in my history text (missing pages between Young and Zappa) but then again, I'm not a guitar player.

It still amazes me that I run into so many people who have no idea what a Chapman Stick is, but then again, I'm a Stick player.

The G Band looks kinda cool although the website says they are sold out for now. I still cut grooves in my Kyser capos to leave various strings full length for wacky tunings so the G band looks like a fun idea. The Zemaitis guitars have been around a long time. If you get the chance to stop by the Hollywood, CA Mesa Boogie store, they have a wall full of 'em. The Chapman Stick is one of the most fascinating instruments ever invented and you guys who can play them are to be admired as it is a complex instrument with amazing range and many beautiful tonal textures. I have a couple of friends who are amazing with a Chapman stick. One of 'em plays two seven string Ibanez Jems simultaneously; one on a strap and one on a stand in front of him when he needs a break from the stick! Let's not even talk about how he tunes the guitars. It's kinda like Van Halen meets Stanley Jordan and they play a duet, only there's one guy. Barry, did you get a chance to hear the band that played several times on the Sennheiser stage that included a Stick player? Sennheiser also had Kaki King, Jerry Morrota, Ravi, Michelle Shocked and a bunch of others on the little stage. A person can't possibly know about all this new and old gear stuff as there are so many small special companies in the instrument business, not to mention the field of high end pro audio and recording stuff that I have been in for decades. I left my attitude and ego behind many years ago regarding new products and stuff I never heard of. If someone mentions a product to me that I have not heard of, I always say "tell me about it" and listen. Your page is cool. I worked my booths at NAMM and had little time to walk the show and look for new stuff, so your report is helpful. In my always humble opinion, the biggest oddity of all is the industry itself, by the way............

The Stick player's name is Tom Griesgraber. I've known Tom for a number of years. He's a great player and he just keeps getting better. I was able to catch one of his sets with Jerry Morotta at the Sennheiser booth.

You can check out Tom's web site if you're interested www.thossounds.com

I, who started this post, just always enjoy Barry's picks from NAMM. Me being someone who will probably never get close to going to it.

I never heard of Zemaitis guitars either, and would love to try out a G-band. Albeit, I have enough work to do playing a standard tuning, in tempo and with the rest of the band!!!

Barry, welcome.

My vote for oddities goes to Marc Schoenberger's airplane ukes. They were however beautiful and I bought one. I think Standing man is close to getting one too if he hasn't already.
