So last night in Amsterdam I had to attend this executive dinner with 4 of the most boring business dudes you could imagine. Middle aged grey haired Armani suit wearing crowd. Caught up in discussing Fannie vs. Freddie long term stability and the virtues of hand stitched seats in the Jag. I just couldn't take it anymore so figgered I've just try to shift the focus a little.

"So what do you guys think of that Phillapino dude singing lead for Journey?"

WELL ... that was it, these guys open up and they're all old rockers, pot smoking hippies in their earlier years, guitar players, audiophiles, etc. The rest of the night was AWESOME.

Now I know why they invited me to the dinner ...

You were supposed to solve the liquidity issue that Freddie and Fannie are having!

Are you saying that you took the discussion off topic?

The Big Guy is NOT going to be happy!

One of my neighbors is in grad school, and we were talking about music, and he starts telling me about how he loves the classics, and I tell 'em I do too, and he starts telling me about Boston, Rush and Journey.

I didn't say anything, and I'm thinking about what happened to the 50's and 60's, seemed odd, but after I thought about it, it made sense.

I realized that to me the classics are the bands from just before I was born or musically aware too, like the Kingsmen, the Temptations, Richie Valens, the Beatles etc.

But still ....

I lived in the Philippines for 6 months and I was amazed at the number of performers doing Western music and doing it extremely well. I came to learn, Filipinos are recognized through-out Asia as outstanding musical acts. A majority of the acts in hotels through-out all of south Asia are Filipino. I saw a group do absolutely scary versions of Roy Orbison tunes (among others...). Dead-on. Culturally, they are absolutely nutz about music... down to a person.

One of the tactics we use to encourage people to be on time to our program classroom in the morning or returning from breaks is to use a "comeback song" to inform them that a break is over and at the end of which, they should be back in the room, ready to go. If they are late, they get to sing a song of their choice for everyone else. This works works very well in America. In the Philippines, however, the entire group would spend the break working-out which song they want to do and then come back late, on purpose, so they could sing...

and they were always very good...

I've worked with Philippine musicians while playing in a band in Guam, years ago. I was amazed at how well they could imitate big name singers and music groups. I surmised that, because of the language difference, they could sing the lyrics imitating an exactness of the original artist. An American cover band would tend to impair their emotions in the lyrics. I admired their musicianship.

So, Tommy, when were you on Guam? I was there for two years (1970-1972ish) while in the Navy, stationed at the Naval Magazine. I lived off base in Santa Rita. Very cool place. I'd love to go back.....

Ditto my experience in the Navy. I sat amazed at how the bar bands would sound exactly like whomever they were trying to emulate. The only thing that proved it wasn't a lip sync was that they didn't always handle the English language very well.. Goodime Charlie Gotta Boo was one I remembered. But man could they sing and play.

Saw and listened to many in the PI ('66), several on tour in Nam ('67-8) and Pa Nang, Malaysia (R&R). The music was dead on, although the vocal enunciations did suffer some; i.e. 'What Am I Libing Por'.

Nonetheless, they were incredible in mimicking the original cuts!

I was on Guam for 2 years, 1976 and 77 in the AF at Andersen.. Played in a band called Wildfire. We did everything from Steve Miller, to Boz Scaggs. Also had a female vocalist we fronted that sounded like Linda Ronsdat. Played at all Navy and AF clubs and a house band at a place called Lan's Shedhouse, in Dededo. It was a fun place, great beaches, and good place to be for live band music.

I was an Air Traffic Controller in the Marines from '72 - '75 stationed at MCAS Yuma, AZ. I got my start playing NCO clubs and then went to various clubs in town. I ended up playing gigs all over the state by the end of '75...Sedona, Phoenix, Tucson...all solo gigs...then in '76 I put a band together and went nationwide...it was a lot of fun and a great starting ground for building a library of requests...

Same observation about philipino cover bands in singapore. Though in singapore, for some reason, they love the girl groups.

At first I wondered, amongst other things, why aren't they playing their own music. And then it dawned on me, our music has become theirs, it's not at all alien to them.

About ten years ago I was in Nepal and spent a few nights in Kathmandu. The tv only had two stations on it. One was a state sponsored (and censored) broadcast out of Bangladesh, and the other was MTV! Really, it is no wonder the world thinks so poorly of Americans. In my younger days of wandering around, it was normal to see ten year old American series playing on European or Asian tv, real high quality stuff like "Dallas". I bet that "Desperate Housewives" and "Jerry Springer" are doing their part these days to show the world the real America.

No. 2 dutch guys and 3 americanos. They took me to the cleaners with the wine selection. Could have bought a nice guitar instead. Of course I'm not sure how I'd put a guitar on my expense report (not that I haven't tried). Dave
