I followed them all over the Gulf Coast during the summer tours in '78 & '79 ...man, did I have a crush on Nancy back then :D Yes, with only 33 made, that in and of itself makes them rare.

Back in 12/04, we suffered through Hector's -7 slothead eBay auctions...if you weren't here, search "hector" in the "For Sale". I believe he was trying to get $12,000. Serge won the eBay auction with a high bid of $5,000. Hector refused to honor the auction. Believe he eventually sold it in a private sale. Rumor that it went for about $7,500. Problem with valuation on these rare birds is that most of the sales have been private and the actual amount is unknown. In addition, what makes this interesting is that we have the factory coming out with # 47 (acoustic) and the OFC (-8, a/e) for a lot less than the asking prices of the originals. Is a reissue the same as the original? As far as playability, quality, and "voice", probably. However, for some...no. They won't be satisfied until they have one of the few originals. As this is an eBay auction, we can all see if the seller gets his reserve or more. A benefit of this offer is that we will have something of a benchmark. There are postings on the 1942 Martin D-45. Bidding is already a lot higher than a similar new D-45 even thought there is damage to the 1942 guitar.

Just means that (as of yet) nobody's "pony-ed up" to an asking price (with the exception of the "HectorDebacle"). I'm sure the re-issues'll be nice. (but personally, I think it'll be somewhat impossible to recapture/recreate the "MoJo" that went into the originals - btw, there were 34) Spend enough money, you can get a really NICE recreation of a FrankLloydWright home (with 21stCentury amenities), . . but (even with all the "flaws") there's something about one of the "Originals" . . . This guitar came from the same music store that mine did. I hope Steve gets what he wants for it. (GoSerge! ;) ) Kinda' wish I was gonna "be around" t'see the outcome of this one . . . .

That said the reissue can be a great way to get real close to what the originals offered. On the other hand the originals are now 30 years old and no matter how hard you try you can't relic that. I suspect that the reissue will also be better workmanship wise (which for the guy that wants "the original vibe" is not a good thing). Be interesting to see where this winds up price wise. Cliff, We'll let you know, go enjoy the cruze. Have one for me!

It will be interesting though to see how these stack up after about three years of playing. Will they have the mojo! (Or do they now!) Has anyone been able to compare them? And who will report in three years?

Joined: December 2003 Posts: 13987 Location: Upper Left USA | The thought occurs to me to ask how is Steve Vaus doing? I get the feeling of a "letting it go" auction. This will be an interesting auction. I know that there are a small handfull of OFC'ers that don't have the price barrier/SWMBO effect that the host of us Dreamers have. I wouldn't know how to play $10K worth of guitar anyway. I hope to see Serge, Tony, Stephen, Stone, Fugot or (?) from the OFC get her! To Dream, perchance to bid!

Joined: August 2003 Posts: 4619 Location: SoCal | from the seller (having problems getting a password due to the server transfer): FROM STEVE: I had no idea my Adamas Slothead would cause such a stir! I'd like to be able to log onto OFC to participate in the discussion but the server gods seem to be conspiring against me - I've been unable to get a password despite having registered a few days ago! Anyhow, this baby is even more beautiful in person than the pictures do justice and I've been torn as to whether to let it go. But frankly I simply have WAY too many guitars and not enough time. Feel free if you have any questions to email me directly at stevevaus@cox.net. However if your question is about the reserve price, that's not something I'm willing to discuss. I wouldn't want to take the fun out of it for everyone. Suffice it to say, based on all of my research and brain picking, the reserve price is not in the stratosphere but it won't go cheap either. I am under no pressure to sell, and if it ends out in my collection for a while longer I wouldn't be heartbroken. Until I get my password I'll be continuing to watch the discussions - happy to know I've given y'all something to talk about for the next 6 days. Steve Vaus

Joined: March 2005 Posts: 2791 Location: Atlanta, GA. | I was curious about the "speckled" case and case covers the slotheads went out with , so I e-mailed Steve since he bought #42 new. He replied, "No, it did not come with a speckled case or cover. I also know that Jim Messina's did not come with such a case or cover. The only thing special about the case was the extra room for the volume and tone knobs!" Thanks Steve. I think Cliff said it best... "Ackerman's got screwed" :D
