We needed a few accessories like strings and Dunlop Strap Loks, so I headed down to the local Guitar Center. First off, the daughter gets all excited and asks to come along. Then, while we're browsing she asks to go play some guitars in the acoustic room. She gets a little twinkle in her eye and pulls a pick out of her pocket! So, we go in and play a few Ovations, settling on her playing a 1778LX and me on a nice Balladeer. We played a couple of songs together. Boy was that a thrill. So then we go into the expensive room. She plays a couple of nice guitars, including a $2500 Martin. When she's done she says she really didn't like any of the expensive guitars. "They're all just, just, like, um, wooden boxes! I'm so proud. My daughter is an Ovation Snob, just like me! epilogue: She did find a non-O that she was smitten with. It's a pretty fun instrument, too. The Yamaha SLG100S . ![]()

Respect and reward her excellant choice making. ...then one day she wants to play an all black electric cuz her boyfriend, Tacklebox-Face (with the mural van), says they rule until a darker color is invented and that's all his band will allow!

None of you OFC types drive the mural van, right?

(I've got a 13 year old blond, blue eyed beauty who has long had a twinkle in her eye for Harley's - why, I have no idea - but I've have thought this strategy out many times.)

I suspect Korn played Ibanez guitars and she didn't know what she was getting. Anyway, today she emailed me and asked me to look for a backpacking guitar for her. She said she knows I have GAS and mom doesn't understand, but maybe I won't get in trouble if I buy a guitar for her. I figured that out awhile ago, but it's good to see she is following some of my footsteps. Now if she'd just get rid of that boyfriend.

But the dog testicle thing has some promise, too.

Just read an article about a father who was charged with kidnapping his daughter's boyfriend and threatening to kill him because he suspected him of selling her drugs. No gun involved, just a piece of pipe. Fortunately, the kid left the state and the dad got a suspended sentence and anger management training. I know the judge. He has kids.

She sure can sing(takes after mom) and insist to her friends that she can play the guitar. She strums it while I do the fretting. Right now I am the only guy she likes, though she will play with her little brother. She has also promised to only marry a guy I approve of. Beautiful child.

You are about in the learn to ride a bike phase, which is also a good bonding time if you can keep your temper. They turn into teenagers at about 10 nowadays. Then dads become useless again until they need to learn how to drive, unless you can squeeze in some soccer or basketball coaching. Then they're gone and you have time to play guitar again.

If you survive past a few lessons, she'll need your help for quite awhile. Then you'll be useful whenever she leaves the lights on and the battery goes dead or she runs out of gas any other car problem occurs. Calling Dad is automatic for car problems.
