Coupla days ago, I heard a "CRACK" along with the faint resonance of strings  ... and after a reluctant visual inspeción, confirmed the horrible truth :( ... directly below and parrallel to the Treble side of the fretboard, soundboard checked from the soundhole to the purfling at the neck/body joint. I had finally removed the Hirade from the case having remained in the case for nearly a week while we she was coming to hold tune with the new strings. I hung it on the wall, next to the Lowden, where it lived for about a week... First time any guitar I have ever owned that has suffered a sound board crack.

(which is in shadow all day as the windows face south, therefore the interior wall faces north)...for those pictures. It was living on another wall in a small alcove...

Never, never, never, hang a guitar on an outside wall (always an interior wall) due to the temperature changes that can occur between the back of the guitar and the front of the guitar. Ovations are probably somewhat immune to this effect but wood backs would be very vulnerable to the different temps. How did the fretboard crack? An ebony board along the grain or a nasty crack that makes the guitar unplayable?

And the guitar was hanging on an interior wall. The hanger on the aforemented wall, holds the token electric JapStrat. Living in a log home, the thermal mass of the logs would negate all but the most minute of temp variations. I'm inclined to think this is due excessive dryness, but just coincided with the string change.

Actually just picked up a killer guitar from GC about 3 weeks ago for a hell of a deal. They were trying to get rid of it and it was calling my name. When I got it home, I checked and saw from the serial number that it was from 2001, so they had it for over 4 years! When I went to clean it up and changed strings and oil the fretboard, I noticed about a 6 inch long crack that ran parallel with the strings on the ebony neck. Quick call to the warranty/service group and I was informed that dryness and cracking due to negligence was not a covered item. Well the deal was too good to give it back, so I went to a local authorized expert repair facility and they filled it in with ebony dust, humidified it properly for a week and then gave it back to me. $40 later and even knowing where to look I could not spot the area of concern.

And, how...? Oh, Jeff, not to change the subject too much - sorry about the guitar. I've heard that Taylor actually has scientific environment chambers that can heal most cracks in wood guitars. Any possibility that might help?
