"We busked around the market towns
And picked fruit down in Kent
And we could tinker lamps and pots
And knives wherever we went

And I said that we might settle down
Get a few acres dug
Fire burning in the hearth
And babies on the rug

She said O man, you foolish man
It surely sounds like hell
You might be lord of half the world
You'll not own me as well"

She was a rare thing
Fine as a beeswing
So fine a breath of wind might blow her away
She was a lost child
She was running wild, she said
As long as there's no price on love, I'll stay
And you wouldn't want me any other way"

Step out the front door like a ghost
Into the fog where no one notices
The contrast of white on white.
And in between the moon and you
Angels get a better view
Of the crumbling difference between wrong and right.
And I walk in the air between the rain
Through myself and back again
Where? I don't know.
Maria says she's dying
Through the door, I hear her crying
Why? I don't know.

Round here we're carving out our names
Round here we all look the same
Round here we talk just like lions
But we sacrifice like lambs
Round here she's slipping though my hands.

Yeah, I think all their albums are steller. Adam Duritz ranks right up with any of the best writers IMHO. Saw them first when they opened for Dylan in '92, before they released their first album. They play a lot here in Northern California in small venues and they are a great band to see live. They have a policy of doing all their new material live before they record them ... AD talked about it during a show and said they can hone their songs if by getting audience feedback and they can tweak their songs before they record them. Then they rent a house (usually in the Hollywood Hills these days) and then all live in the house and record there, rather than in studio.

These fragile bodies of touch and taste
This vibrant skin this hair like lace
Spirits open to the thrust of grace
Never a breath you can afford to waste

When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Sometimes you're made to feel as if your love's a crime
Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight

Now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky, the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart

You wander down the land and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the STARDUST of yesterday
The music of the years gone by

Sometimes I wonder why I spend the lonely night
Dreaming of a time
The memory haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new

And each kiss, an inspiration
Oh, but that was long ago
And now my consolation
Is in the stardust of a song

Beside a garden wall when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his faerietale
Of paradise where roses grow

Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My starddust reverie
The memory of loves refrain

Hoagy Carmichael

The strands in your eyes that color them wonderful
Stop me and steal my breath
And emeralds from mountains thrust towards the sky
Never revealing their depth

And tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I'll be captivated, I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above

(And I'll throw another vote in for Counting Crows as well - great stuff)

And another that I like a lot:

Did I ask too much?
More than a lot.
You gave me nothing,
Now it's all I've got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then You make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what You got
When all You've got is hurt

Yes I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
you know what a drag it is to see you.

A man conceived a moment’s answers to the dream,
Staying the flowers daily, sensing all the themes.
As a foundation left to create the spiral aim,
A movement regained and regarded both the same,
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you.

"Well the first days are the hardest days
Don't you worry any more
'Cause when life looks like easy street
There is danger at your door
Think this through with me
Let me know your mind
Wo oh, what I want to know
Is are you kind?" (Jerry Garcia)

"Lately I've been talking in my sleep,
I can't imagine what I'd have to say" (Eric Clapton)

"I'm a-thinkin' and a-wonderin' all the way down the road,
I once loved a woman, a child I am told,
I'd give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's alright."
(Robert Zimmerman)

Pinstripe Suit
by Cigar Store Indians

Chorus:
He's just a pinstripe suit
No hat, no cowboy boot
No scar from the life he lives
His money, that's all he is
I'm like your faded jeans
A little rough around the seams
I'm torn but I still fit you
A lot better than a pinstripe suit

Help me Lord, my baby's gettin' bored
She's been looking at white collared men
With a college degree they shake the money tree
It's hard to compete with them
In my pickup truck, I'm a sittin' duck
Here comes heartache tuggin' on me
Before you run, let me tell you hon
How I see things...

You used to to say that you and me
were cut from the same cloth
That our long walks and midnight talks
Was all you'd ever want
So go ahead and make your day
And kiss the dollar bill
But don't come back from the money shack
Looking for something real...

Fairport Convention Lyrics

Who Knows Where the Time Goes

Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it's time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
Sad, deserted shore, your fickle friends are leaving
Ah, but then you know it's time for them to go
But I will still be here, I have no thought of leaving
I do not count the time
For who knows where the time goes?
Who knows where the time goes?
And I am not alone while my love is near me
I know it will be so until it's time to go
So come the storms of winter and then the birds in spring again
I have no fear of time
For who knows how my love grows?
And who knows where the time goes?

When you consider the words of man:

"I wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then"
B.S.

Lately for me it's been the words of Todd Agnew in Fragile Breath that awe me:
I searched the world for a song that I could sing
Praise to my King, A gift that I could bring
But no music I found could compare to You
Not one could do Justice to Your glory
What are my songs compared to Yours

CHORUS:
You speak with thunder and lightening
Your voice shakes the mountains
The foundations of the earth
All I can offer is this fragile breath
With each one I'll praise You
With each one I'll praise You more

I searched the world for a poem I could read
A rhyme that would bring Glory to my King
But no writing I found was worthy of
This God high above all other gods
What are my words compared to Yours

CHORUS

My Dad beat me 'cause mine said "Mother".
But my Mother naturaly liked it...and beat my brother.
'Cause his tatoo was was a lady in the nude
And my Mother thought that was extremly rude...

Why to I have to be different than I am
Just to earn the respect of a dancehall friend
And have the same old row, again and again

And why do I have to move with a crowd
Of kids that hardly notice I'm around
I work myself to death...just to fit in.

A silly one I always liked is:

Shoot me down in flames if I should tell a lie.
Cross my I promise that its true.
I've been in love so many times before.
but never with a girl like you.

Well..... as long as we're quoting classics...

Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rollin' high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet on edges, soon," said I
Proud 'neath heated brow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

Hold me my daddy,
I never felt lower than dirt on the floor.
I say hold me my daddy,
I never felt like crying oceans before.
This civil war, why are we in it?
Might’ve fired off a couple of rounds, I didn’t mean to begin it.
If these are the bullets that every father and son must chew,
Well then hold me my daddy, I forgot to say I love you.

Hold me my daddy,
It hurts me to see grown men fighting this way.
I say hold me my daddy,
The young and the old dog aren’t having their day.

This civil war, why are we in it?
There’s nobody on this flat earth, would ever want to win it.
If these are the hot coals that every father and son walks through,
Well then hold me my daddy, I forgot to say I love you.

And if you agree we can make amends.
All this squabbling I’ve hated.
In another time and another place where our history bends,
We could’ve been the best of friends and not merely related.

Well these are the right words to say,
They’re difficult but still true,
Well then hold me my daddy,
I forgot to say I love you.

(hold him. tight. hold him like he was a baby.)

Woke up this morning put on my slippers
Walked in the kitchen and died
And oh what a feeling! When my soul went thru the ceiling
And on up into heaven I did ride
When I got there they did say, John, it happened this way
You slipped upon the floor and hit your head
And all the angels say just before you passed away
These were the very last words that you said:

Please don’t bury me down in that cold cold ground
No, I’d druther have em cut me up and pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears if they don’t mind the size

Give my stomach to Milwaukee if they run out of beer
Put my socks in a cedar box just get em out of here
Venus de milo can have my arms - Look out! I’ve got your nose
Sell my heart to the junkman and give my love to Rose

Please don’t bury me down in that cold cold ground
No, I’d druther have em cut me up and pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears if they don’t mind the size

Give my feet to the footloose careless, fancy free
Give my knees to the needy don’t pull that stuff on me
Hand me down my walking cane it’s a sin to tell a lie
Send my mouth way down south and kiss my ass goodbye

Please don’t bury me down in that cold cold ground
No, I’d druther have em cut me up and pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears if they don’t mind the size
