Location: 6 String Ranch | I went there today and gave them one of my Nationals to sell. Check out their web site, they are totally high end stuff, all great. REALLY esoteric.
I played a Tippin that had brazilian and a moon beam harvested alpine spruce top. The story goes that there are two times a year when the sap is at a low point in the tree and they harvest the tree at night to maximize this. The trees are pulled from the forest by helicopter and these are supposed to be the rarest of the best. Now tell me the truth, who thinks up this shit? That bit of Marketing rhetoric alone is worth the extra 1600 they charge for the top! Yeah, I'm sure it's all true and it was a great guitar and they wanted $23000 for it. They still have it.
Now I'm outside and just leaving when Davis calls to tell me he just found the best amp in the world. It's a $200 used Dean Markley POS and he says it works and sounds great. I tell him where I have just been and can't wait to get home to play my new Tak that is the replacement to the one I loaned him that he won't give back!
Davis said they harvest it at night cause they're stealing the trees. The helicopter might give that away but that's a small point.
Two ends of the spectrum within 10 minutes!
I must be getting too old, this really high end doesn't have the same zing it used to.
Yeah, a Ferrari is a great car but I'd rather drive my Tahoe. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | The Tahoe probably gets better gas mileage. Regarding status, it is currently fashionable to be green. There was a blurb on the CBS Morning News last Sunday about how it will take 10 years of driving your new hybrid an average number of miles, assuming a 10 mpg improvement, just to make up for the fuel used in manufacturing the hybrid. I don't think that accounted for the damage caused by disposal of the batteries and recovery of the cost of buying the car.
Lately we've had a huge increase in bicycle riders, which is great, but it seems like all the guys I've seen have these bright spandex outfits. Do they use petroleum to make spandex? This doesn't account for the damage to my brain from seeing a fat guy in spandex on a bicycle. |

It's not that your vehicle is cool, Damon, it's the cool stuff it holds. |

It's a great place, don't get me wrong, and I'll probably go there often. I've never seen a collection of that many of those types of instruments. Thank God somebody is doing it.
Maybe it was just talking to Davis right after it and missing not being able to play weekly (but I've still got weakly covered). I just had this really strong reaction of give me my basic guitar(which is plenty good enough) and let's go play. The music is more important than the instrument. And that from the guy who wrote several chapters in the book "Making up for lack of talent by having excellent equipment"
Maybe some of you are familiar with this book? |

Guitar gear is like wine.
Generally, it gets better the more you spend, but it reaches a point of no return, just like wine that ages too much and becomes vinegar.
That's why I love finding a relatively inexpensive bottle of wine, but that tastes great and I'm really happy with it ... same for guitar stuff ... I'm so much happier with a reasonably priced piece that works great, then paying for something made with moon beams. That stuff to me is vinegar.
It's the reason I like ovations. I feel like I got this great wine at a decent price. |

In some ways the world's best is a great $10 bottle.
Not that there's anything wrong with the moonbeam stuff. That's great stuff.
Of course most helicopters can only lift 5-7000 pounds. The Kamov, a Russian beast could lift up to 10,000# if I remember correctly. Now how much does a full grown tree weigh? BUT, let's not get caught up in facts and technicalities. |
