I love my '84. It has a very big sound for a S/S bowl.

99, cuz that's the only one I have. I think it's the best looking, not necessarily the best sounding. I like the looks of the red maple one, too, I think it was the 01 and the Redwoods of 02, but I might have those switched.
The only one on my must have list is the 87.

Define BEST !!!

I vote for '82, '87, '97, '05

82 because it was the first one.
87 because it sounds and looks very good.
97 because it was unique and showed balls to do.
05 because it was radical and sounds great.

Rumor is that the '07 Collector will be AMAZING.

2002 and 2005, of course!!!! (I have those)

The 2002 is an African Cherry laminated top "panelmaster", not redwood. Looks great, but probably doesn't sound as good.

'08 must be an FD-14 gloss top reissue......

Where's Photogazer? He has a bunch of them. OAO, it was the 2002 African cherry that I was thinking about. It and the 99 Waterfall Bubinga are the best looking in my book, but I've always been fond of red.

'97 wide neck is a wonderful guitar.

Big sound from a small guitar.

Yup. Even though I sold mine, the '97 now THAT was a collector. Everything else was just variations on the same theme. The '97 defined what "collector" is all about. Sure, it didn't appeal to most people, the electronics sucked, the tuner buttons broke, but DAMN it still brings shivers to my spine to think that the suits in Bloomfield would even LET them build such a thing. How in the world did the '97 ever slip past marketing without getting axe'd? Dave

Well, now I have been asked to respond, The best collector I have ever played, and I have played several from every year, is the current 2006. It is a great guitar. After that, in descending order, would be the 2002, 1999, 2003, 1984, 1986 12 string, 2001, 1995, 2000, and then it all gets a bit blurry. Of course, this is my opinion, and it really doesn't count for anything, except that my specialty is the Collectors Series. The best collector for you is the one you like best.

WOW, another vote for the 2002 (second is better than anyone else except me would have said)!!!! A very underrated guitar. I bought it on sound, not looks.

I have to say that purely asthetically, as I haven't played any of them, the 1999 is a beautiful guitar. The top was called waterfall bubinga, and it really stands out, for me anyway. I'd love to play one to see if it plays as good as it looks.

Come on down. Doesn't sound anywhere near as good as a 1537 or even a Folklore, but I'm going to replace the Martin SPs on it one of these days and see if that helps. The XLR kicks ass. Played it last night with a little reverb. Sounded like everyone in the concert hall could hear all my mistakes. Fortunately, we were really just in my basement. The only thing I wish the 99 had was the Collector designation at the 12th fret.

Mark, does the 1999 have anything on the 12th fret?

Nope. No fretmarkers at all. Maybe they thought the waterfall bubing top was enough bling.

I love my 2005. It sounds great unplugged and causes me to leave a rosewood guitar in the case a lot of the time. I also love my 1996 just on looks alone, all that abalone and the most perfect slab of ebony used on the fretboard. Incidentally, a 2003 is on my want list if anybody's got one they would part with. (Please don't suggest the one on eBay presently).
