The one I saw was gorgeous. and the Koa collector is a cannon. Great overtones, rich and balanced. now that vip preamp.....I don't get it.., but the koa collector -I think whoever gets one would be pretty happy...and they are a limited quanity :p mike

Joined: January 2005 Posts: 640 Location: boulder | The one I played yesterday was damn nice. The figured Koa is just cool to stare at. And that is before getting ready to play... With only bass side soundholes, this thing is a big sound pump. Very deep low end (like the adamas 1581 anniversary model w/bass only soundholes). But it also has a full mid range and nice woody hi end. I think timbre is the word i am looking for, someone school me here.. another cool thing is the VIP preamp can be stuck into another guitar with op-pro housing, and the VIP works in that other guitar as well. And the op-pro works in the Koa collector as well. Which is nice, because then you can have a tuner that works without a cord plugged into it, (did I say that?) The koa collector is a really nice instrument. I doubt many who buy will resell, that sort of nice...peace mike the one I played (my friends) was s/n 193

My Koa is much thinner, with a very crispy sound. Well it is hard to describe, even in a foreign language. But bass and full sound is not where my Koa wins over the 1581. Best Regards, Kurt

I was surprised that they only made 582 or so of the 2005. And even at that low number, some of them ended up as closeouts. Roger

Specially taken for furniture, boatfurniture and necks on classical guitars. I also wondered why Ovation built it as a one piece neck. I love the stripes of the five piece necks, even more with a ebony center stripe. Maybe it is a new way to sign the 'high class' guitars, with the new 2080 and 1680 Adamas also having again a one piece neck, like the old one/two piece maple necks. Best regards, Kurt

Advantage and disadvantage of a one-piece neck? It's about the same price as the new 2080 Adamas model. Anyone play both to compare? Please don't mention ice cream if you did compare!

It's worked for Martin, Fender, Gibson and tons of other makers for ever. 2 piece necks with opposing grain directions or multi-laminate necks may be very strong, but that does not mean that a one-piece neck is weak.

Joined: September 2003 Posts: 9301 Location: south east Michigan | Well...My local, independent, music store of choice just got in a Koa Collector. This was my first chance to play one since last years tour. Man..what a nice guitar. Lots of bottom end yet enough highs for it to still have that Ovation brightness. A real boomer yet a different enough flavor where I would not be duplicating something I already have. I'm going to try and go back today and spend some time with the VIP pre-amp. I dunno...this might be the one. I told the store owner (Paul Huber) and he reminded me about their anniversery sale coming up on the 15th. I told him that I gotta wait until after the tour to make up my mind. Maybe there is something else cool in the works for '07. If the tour was not on the horizon I could have very easily whipped out the "happy card" and taken it home with me. But I have to remember my mission statement concerning the tour to study the Adamas textured top sound and the 12 fret to the body thing. The only fly in the ointment was that after, I made a quick stop at the GC a couple blocks away. There was a koa Celebrity there that was just a little to close looking to the KoaC. A world of difference where it really matters, but still a little to close in looks. BTW...Paul Huber told me that he could just not bring himself to order a 47RI for his inventory. He gave it some thought but decided that a $3,000 Ovation, without electronics, would be to hard to move. I told him about the reviews it was getting from the OFC members. He did not disagree...he just said, "You got to be a real hardcore fan to pay 3k for an Ovation that you can't plug in."

Believe me, I liked it very much, even though they didn't build it the way I wanted them to. Luckily (or not) I can't afford to indulge the feeling, or I'd be looking for a new (and larger) place to rest my head...

Huber & Breese is not afraid to spend money on inventory if they think they can move it. They sold three of the $40k McCartney guitars including serial #1. He has a couple Adamas on display and 3 or 4 nice LX models and an EliteT. He does have a couple Tangents and an Applause that have been there forever. Those were some poor choices for inventory. I wish he would just blow them out on an internet sale. It boils down to (and here we go again).. what their sales staff is conditioned to push. Taylors and Martins first. After that, product knowledge and enthusiasm fall right off the charts. But we have beaten that subject to death many times.
