I've had some wood tops that sounded heavenly, and others that I wouldn't play twice. (insert joke about trader jim here) All the Adami I've owned and played sound nice, with small variations. Wood tops have a much larger span of tones. (IMHO)

The wood-topped models are good for that traditional, "woody" goodness that they provide, but the carbon-topped Adamas is just more highly "responsive", and is the epitome of a super-efficient "machine" converting physical vibration into "sound" (with of course, the exception being the Q's, which(t'ME, anyway) sound more "wooden" than ANY of it's carbon-based brethren) . . . How'sThat, Iffy??

An FD14 vs. an SMT faux-adamas, the FD14 eats it for lunch. An Adamas I vs. an 1868 elite, no contest the Adamas kills it. What the hell are you asking? If the question is "what type of tone do you prefer, that made by a carbon guitar or that made by a good wooden guitar", then it's personal preference and for me I prefer the tone of a wooden guitar. But there's a lot of Ovation wooden top guitars that suck. No bad guys to chase on a holiday? Dave PS - If you are THAT bored, how about finally (what's it been 4 years?) hook up your damn soundcard and start recording something, will you? And once you figger it out, give Al a call and help him.

In any recording situation where the call would be for a full bodied acoustic, it gets the nod every time. I also enjoy handing it to a player who is skeptical that Ovation ever made anything acoustically special. People like that are often blown away by the Adamas sound. I will say though, I have a very pleasing CL mid bowl that I love to record capo'd high for counterparts. It's a sweet sound... but it's not an Adamas.

Though, if it came down to keeping one "O" or one "A", based on sound alone... I'd probably go with the 47 RI Adamas... But I tellz'ya folks, the UglyDelucks Balladeer would be hot on its ass. Tough choice.

As far as the question, I voted carbon graphite but mostly I wanted to see the results. Paul M. .... I'm surprised this type of "best / worst" poll came from you. You have become my roll model for coming to terms with the "which guitar is better" type qustions. I hope I don't have to go searching for a new mentor.

Joined: March 2002 Posts: 15670 Location: SoCal | You know, I posted this (somewhat out of boredom) just because as much as I like the OFC slothead (ding!), the guitar I pick up the most is the 87C. I can tell you that the Adamas is a better guitar, yet I still prefer to play the wood topped Ovation. Hell, I'm about to spend money on a wood topped Ovation that could become my primary playing guitar (acoustic only, no electronics). I didn't set up the poll correctly. For that I apologize. I guess what I'm trying to learn is how others feel about the difference between the two types of guitar and which is mostly picked up. Maybe I'm experiencing the same thing as the Tak player who has a D size guitar and an OM size and loves them both, but picks up one more than the other.......
