Just letting it out there that I had to put it on E-bay. Its not something I'm happy about I looked for years to find this but I got to buy health insurance... If anyone is interested just do a general search for an "ovation 1117-4". Its in excellent condition no cracks, no problems with the tuning staying or anything. It comes with the hard case and the original owners book. It even still has 95% of the rubber leg rest(the thing that keeps it from slipping off your leg). Just take of it if you buy it, play it often. Its too nice just to be a corner model...

It looks nice. The shipping is way to high. I sent a 12 string from CT to CA FedEx ground, and it was less than 50 bucks.

If you lower the shipping, I suggest you add a note to your description. :)

I checked with a couple shipping companies and my seller really isn't getting anything, the weight of the guitar and the hard ovation case it comes in is high. and the length is above the normal shipping cost margin. I have to put it in a box and have 2" of padding this makes it an oversize item...so I'm kinda stuck there, sorry.

Well....

Being it's Saturday and I'm feeling a little curious....

I went to my handy dandy shipping scale and put my O in it's case on there.. 14.2 pounds. (I was surprised that was all it weighed! Unreal.)

Let's say 16 pounds for the sake of shipping.

Then popped up my UPS software - and put in generous dimensions of 48 x 24 x 12" for the box.

Then I grabbed a Connecticut zip code - so Colorado to Connecticut...

I came up with a $34 price. Toss on some fuel surcharges and stuff and it's still well under $40.

And that is being calculated as being oversize - the size of the box automatically popped the shipping weight up to 70 pounds. So anything under 70 pounds would have shipped for the same price.

Just thought you might want to know that. :)

Um, can we leave the personal attacks out of this and just talk about shipping charges ???

As a point of reference, I've shipped 50 or so guitars within the US and it has never cost more than $50. But that's not the point, you (the seller) can charge whatever you like for shipping. I think the comments offered here were that the amount you quoted might limit the number of potential buyers, that's all.

Ovation guitar in hard case, padded in a factory Ovation box weighs about 20-21 pounds. What happens is that if the box is oversized, it get's charged at a flat 70 pounds rate. So yes, for oversized boxes, any wight up to 70 pounds gets charged the same rate. Ship an empty oversized guitar box and you'll see what I mean.

Good luck with the sale. I'm sure it's a nice guitar.

Well, Josh - aren't you just a ray of sunshine?

:)

Are you related to my teenage daughter? I swear you've been talking to her. She's just like you - you're both WAAAAAAAAAY smarter than me. She's now living on her own, so it's nice that we've had this little chat - it brings back some of the memories of why I hated it when she lived here.

And don't worry - I'm not bidding. I was trying to be helpful to you.

As you can see from others postings - what I told you was 100% accurate for the size of box we're talking about to send a guitar.

I sell on ebay and I ship stuff outta here every week via UPS - and I own a shipping scale that is accurate to 1/5 of a pound. I've used it for about a year, and sometimes when my boxes are not ready when my driver comes too early to pick up from me, I have to run my boxes down to the local UPS store to go out the same day. When that happens, I have the clerks there double check the weights on my boxes - and my scale has been accurate enough that they have never had to correct my labels.

My O with it's case weighed in at 14.2 pounds... so fine. Maybe yours is a boat anchor compared to this one, but like I said, that doesn't matter if shipping by UPS. Because once the box is oversize, it pops the rate up the SAME as if it weighed more - and in this case, it's 70 pounds.

If there's a fool here, it's not me. :)

I've been stung on the oversize box thing before with the regular products I sell. I once sold several dozen boxed specialty plastic martini glasses (they weigh almost nothing but take up a fair amount of space) but I made the mistake of putting them in a box that was a total of about 3" too big (L+W+H)so a 6 pound package's rate got bumped up to that of a 30 pound one. I lost money on that shipment because I biffed by using a box that was a smidge too big.

I took measurements of my O case and added a few inches to each dimension for a box and allowing for a little styrofoam.

Just know that many bidders on eBay are going to avoid your auction when they see what they consider outrageous shipping charges - especially from a seller with a feedback of 1.

The only reason I would consider bidding on your auction (if I were interested) is because you take PayPal for this thing - so if by chance you were a dishonest or non-performing seller, PayPal would give me (the buyer) a refund easily. PP always sides in the favor the buyer - so just know that everything better be as described.

Next day air should be closer to $250 instead of $550.

I've never used that shipping calculator thing in my auctions - but it looks like yours was set up to at least double the actual rate.

You might have gotten more bidders if that shipping wasn't set so high. That's all I was trying to help you with.

Take care.

you know... I was going to type in something ignorant but then I thought why? I really don't care what you say, I'd love my daughter unconditionally I try not to attack people and I apologize for my defensive reaction. I got a freight quote and a shipping quote and if you can get it cheaper great mabye i'm putting something in wrong, but your sarcastic attacks don't help anything. But I hope they made you feel better, wishing you the best,
Joshua

Oooohhhh....

I love my daughter unconditionally as well - but there are more days than not these past 4 years that I didn't like her very much. If I didn't give birth to her, I would have cut off contact with her 3 years ago. The times she's spent in jail have been like mini-vacations around here. During those retreats, I at least knew she couldn't do drugs or get pregnant.

As a parent, I'm in it for the long haul with her - and hoping that she might turn a corner and have an enlightening moment by the time she's 30 or so - (and I hope I'm still alive to see it) and she will realize and regret what a total pain in the ass she's been. It's been no fun being a parent to her for the last 4 years.

If you ever see the really vile teenagers on a show like Maury Pauvich or Springer (as you're flying through the channels - I would never assume you to be the kind of idiot that watches a show like that in its entirety).... that's what I'm talkin' about here.

She's what drove me back to guitar playing recently - I figger'd it was a healthier mental health expense than turning into a barfly at my age or spending $80 a week on some psychologist to work out the kinks that have added up these past 4 years. :)

I now have a 10 month old granddaughter from my daughter - and I have big concerns for her health and safety. So the non-stop negative, dangerous behavior and drama continues... with a baby in the mix. It's heartbreaking.

I apologize profusely for comparing you to my daughter.... because if you knew her, you'd truly know what a terrible thing I said about ya.

:)

Oh... and PS... it's good that you avoided being ignorant this time around. Thanks for that.

As far as your freight quote goes - I think somebody is scoring at least an extra $60 off of you - and it probably cost you some bidders on a great item like this.

.....plus, if a professional seller is selling this for you, you should get your money back for the poor quality pictures. They're not helping you, either. I've sold several guitars on eBay, and clear, detailed pictures really draw interest.

I wouldn't pay what you want for shipping to BUY a guitar I couldn't see, much less whatever the reserve is.

Dave, I applaud your attempt at diplomacy, but sometimes you've just gotta say it like it is.

Josh, you're a punk. You're talking here to people who ship things EVERY DAY, and know more about it than you do. You're also talking to people who actually HAVE children and have had to live with the heartbreak that can come along with them.
Instead of listening to them, you attack people who are doing nothing more than trying to help you with no thought of gain, because you think you know more.
Your sad, sorry excuse for an apology is pathetic. If you are interested in being thought of as something better than an ignorant fool, I suggest you rethink your previous posts, get some 'nads and apologize correctly for your distinctly ass-like behaviour.

1 - I'm not sad. I just spent a fantastic weekend with good friends, playing awesome guitars and learning a bunch of cool new stuff from pros.
2 - I never feel good about having to tell someone they're behaving like a child (unless they happen to be one).
3 - I don't hate my life. I've been blessed, and to hate that would be an insult to the One who gives the blessing.
4 - I'm not particularly worried about whether or not you come back. But if you do decide to come back and listen to sound advice from people who know more than you, I suggest you do it with a different attitude.

Mitz, I knew leaving you all without supervision was a bad idea, but all the adults were going out of town.

Josh seems to be very angry, espesially since we were trying to help him (at least it started out that way). Back to the shipping issue. It may not have mattered, and we all might have put up a stink for nothing. When it comes down to it, we usually include the shipping in the price we are willing to pay for something. If a guitar sells for 500 bucks, and shipping is 120, someone bought a guitar shipped to his door for 620.00. If it sells for 600 and ships for 40, the price is 640. You know what I'm gettint at. Shipping is only an issue if it makes a 'good deal' not a good deal anymore. I would bid on a guitar like this if the TOTAL cost didn't go over what I was willing to pay for it.
