It looks just like the one he played. I'm trying to find as many different pictures as I can of Jim playing his Ovation. Anybody out there got any? If so, please post them here and please post any thoughts you have on Jim's music.

I'm sure there's lots of photos. Maybe a google picture search would also yield lots of results for you. Make sure you put a truss rod cover on your '88 Legend to make it "Croce Authentic". Dave

If he had only had a little more time, I think his place in music history would be a lot higher. I have never made the trek out to San Diego yet to visit Croce's but I hope to someday. One footnote here: In the "History of Ovation Guitars" book, there is a mention of the fact that Jim's 1617 survived the plane crash that killed him. "A morbid testament to Ovation's durability" it says. Isn't that something. Their hardshell cases are very well made too, obviously. My Dad bought my first Ovation after I learned how to play his favorite song, "Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)". He had told me for years that if I ever learned how to play the song, he would take me into a guitar shop and let me take my pick. Of course, I thought he would welch on the deal but he didn't. After I played "Operator" for him the first time, he said, "All right; we'll go tomorrow." When we walked in and I saw that Sunburst Legend I thought, "that's the one." I've been an Ovation enthusiast ever since.

That and Tony Calman would make the trip worthwhile, but I will be there for a week playing with Porsches. I liked Croce when he was a new guy and remember when he died in 73. I never learned Operator, but it's one on the list. Time In a Bottle was one I learned note by note just after he died. After a 25 year layoff I discovered I didn't know the main verses. Thanks to StephenT28, I now do a credible job, along with a good job on "I'll Have to Say I Love You", New York's Not My Home, Hard Way Every Time, Dreamin' Again, and parts of others. It's just good basic guitar and lyrics with a vocal range that doesn't require surgery.
