Joined: January 2004 Posts: 338 Location: SE Michigan | I was browsing through the Ovation listing on Ebay and I can't believe how stupid and inept some of the sellers are. Check out the one: http://cgi.ebay.com/USA-MADE-OVATION-model-1112-MINT-CONDITION_W0QQ... The guy shows one distant photo of the guitar (taken from the next room I think), then one of an empty case, and one of the sales tag! Dude, do you really think I am interested in the empty case and the tags? Show me some details of the FREAKIN GUITAR!!! Or this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Ovation-12-string-Acoustic-Electric-Gui... Might be a nice guitar, but I really can’t tell since the photos were taken from an earth orbiting satellite!! Or this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Ovation-12-string-Acoustic-Electric-Gui... Don’t they make cameras that focus themselves these days? I just cant believe that people go through all of the trouble to post a guitar on Ebay, then they either take crappy photos or only put in one or two useless photos. Photos only cost something like 12 cents on Ebay, seems like if you are selling a guitar for hundreds or thousands of dollars you could afford to add a few decent ones. Or what about the descriptions? It doesn’t cost anything to add as much text as you want to an Ebay posting. Could you please tell me something about THE CONDITION of the FUC* guitar? How about the model number? Or what about the listings that contain nothing but the manufacturer’s specs? I am fully capable of looking at the manufacturer’s photos and specs myself, it doesn’t impress me at all that you put them in your listing. Idiots. Then I am forced to email them questions and most of them don’t even bother to respond. Do you really want to sell this guitar? When I sell a guitar on Ebay I have at least 8 to 10 detailed photos plus a detailed description of the condition of the guitar, complete with full details about any damage. Thanks for hearing my rant. I just can’t believe that these idiots actually want to sell these guitars when the Ebay postings could have been done better by my 6 year old.

A) You are coming up with many examples to make your point. Therefore....you must be pulling up a good number of Ovation E-bay auctions and reading them very carfully. And where-as GAS is known to be contagious among friends, it's not a very big jump to the conclusion that.....BrianT is shopping for his next guitar!!! :D

But sellers with shitty photos, mislabeled model numbers and mis-spelled brand names are a buyers best source of a deal. I have gotten some absolute steals from people who didn't know what they had and didn't go to the trouble of making it possibe for anyone else to know either. Damn that IS a shiny bowl classical for $90. And how about the Adams 12-String. What a deal. Sometimes a-holes and idiots are my best friends (present company excluded). Dave

I would'nt mind stumbling into a nice twelve string or a Longneck. That 1982 Collectors that Tupperware recently picked up looked like a steal. But I am too poor these days for anything that goes into four digits.

Joined: September 2004 Posts: 777 Location: East Wenatchee, WA | Now I know why I have never listed anything for sale on ebay. I am scared that my lack of technical skills might get me hammered on some forum and hurt my widdle feelers. Truthfully, there is a combination of folks that just aren't into tech. They want to be, but don't have the ability or equipment to make it happen. Granted until they are, perhaps they are better to not try, but....then again, why not. I have tried to buy from folks who simply cannot provide pictures because they don't own a digital camera or scanner. I have talked to them on the phone or via email. Determined they were sincere and honest and scooped a good deal. Certainly there are the flakes too, but let's not be too hard on folks that the digital revolution by-passed. By the way....on only got my first cell phone about 2 years ago, and what is instant messaging anyway?

But come-on, if they are into Tech enough to get on the internet and make a posting, complete with a crappy digital photo, they ought to possess most of the skills needed to do the job right. And what about the crappy descriptions? What are we talking here....basic English and typing? I think my term "idiots" hits closest to the mark. But I do see Tupperware's point, crappy marketing is a buyer's opportunity.

Joined: March 2005 Posts: 12759 Location: Boise, Idaho | I'm with you, Jeff. Maybe I'll use that excuse for why I won't sell any of my guitars on ebay. My wife buys the gizmos and then expects me to figure out how to use them. I can usually set them up, but then when something gets broke, I can't fix it. Our scanner has been down for months. My wife's cell phone is impossible to figure out and now she replaced all the phones in the house with these things that don't have any words on them. Does a blue phone mean something in some universal language? Nuff rant. I like the ebay guys that don't know anything. It's usually better than the ones that have crappy pictures when they have enough sales to make you suspicious. That's when I figure the crappy picture is trying to hide something. I got my 99 Collector's and Folklore from first time sellers who really didn't know what they had and didn't do a good job of displaying it.

I guess in my sick and sarcastic way I was trying to actually help people by pointing out that a shitty Ebay listing usually equals a low selling price. I am such a heathen.

Knowing him quite well, I beleive he had his tounge planted firmly in his cheek and truly regrets his post. Sidebar.... It makes me wonder if at times my own posts come across in a different way than intended. Funny thing, this internet stuff.

Ohhhhhhh yea.....ute! ute! ute! ute! ute! ute! ute! ute! ute! ute! ute! ute! ute! ute! At least I think he was talking about a ute. Thanks for clearing that up, Brad. I was just about to weigh in until I saw that John had beaten me to it. Then I was about to weigh in again until I saw your reply. Miles makes a great point about these posts in his letter. There are so many people here that are experts on Ovations and experts on eBay, it could be intimidating to sell one.

Knowing him quite well, I beleive he had his tounge planted firmly in his cheek and truly regrets his post. No, he did not misinterpret my response. I found it quite annoying to have a hall monitor wanna-be remind me of what is purported on this board to be some kind of decency standard. And what some people find offensive on this board continues to puzzle me. Maybe I just don’t get it. This board commonly contains threads with remarks about bestiality, preferring one's wife on her back, profanity, and general obnoxiousness. Yet I dare to complain about a relevant issue and Taliban is on my back. I was discussing a topic that we all have dealt with and I think we are all-familiar with, seems to be the right board for such a discussion. So if my comments are somehow offensive, drop me a private email or message. Or better yet ignore my threads and mind your own business. Please don't correct me like some juvenile delinquent in front of the whole forum.

I look at O's on the 'bay all the time looking for a bargain that will probably never happen, but the guy with detailed descriptions and high-res pics of potential trouble spots are the guys who buy and sell all the time, and know the value of what they're selling. Fuzzy pics are a drag, but when someone says 'guitar with round plastic back, one string gone, might need a new one, I don't know anything about guitars....etc., these are where deals are found.

Joined: June 2005 Posts: 231 Location: N.J. | I usually look at a sellers feedback rating before I judge their character. If a guy is selling an O and has only done 20 or less transactions and possibly even lower if he wasnt the seller for all, than I chalk it up to someone who 1.just doesnt have the experience to know what makes a good auction or 2.he just wants to sell it and basically it is what it is. The auctions where a seller has TONS of feedback, been a member on the bay for years and still gives a generic description and/or shitty pics, well imo it doesnt make the auction look to genuine, and I would have doubts about that auction. If your new to whole experience thats one thing.I'll ask to call you and then ask tons of questions if need be.But there is no excuse for garbage pics and a generic description if you've had 500 transactions.
