As the wedding day of my daughter draws near, I now have to come up with a song for the father/daughter dance. While I've got a couple of ideas, I know there are plenty of opinions here ... and I'll take any and all. "Put Me in the Poor House" has already been nixed.

"In a gada de veda" will provide a long moment to say goodby and good luck!

Butterfly Kisses is a great one. The "Unforgetable" Duet redo with Natalie Cole is a little more Classic.

Stay away from Dixie Chicks.

And Congratulations!

Bring your kleenex and dance to "Butterfly Kisses". You AND your daughter will never forget the moment ...

Of course "Ina Gada Da Vida" would be forever memorable as well ... but for a whole different reason. ;)

"Butterfly Kisses" is good, but maybe overused.....

....I'd stay away from "Dancing With Myself" by Billy Idol.....

It really won't matter.
My daughter got married last October and I can't remember what the song was, but I can remember the dance, that's all that counts.

Harry Chapin
"Tangled-Up Puppet" (won't be a dry-eye in the house).

Paul Simon
"Father & Daughter".
Slightly "up-tempo", but a nice song nonetheless.
Father & Daughter

(The above Amazon link will let you sample it. Check the "Also Recommended" reference there to a CD-single from somebody else . . . tho, I've never heard it)

Roger Daltrey
"Everything a Heart Could Ever Want"

Neil Young
"Here for You" (from the current "Prairie Wind" album.)

(btw: This album was premiered as a live concert at the Ryman Auditorium, and was filmed by Jonathan Demme. The resultant concert film "Heart of Gold" just came out on DVD. VERY WellDone!!! I highly recommend it.)

Nickel Creek - When You Come Back Down

(And just give it a listen before the title throws you in the wrong drection - great song in the "letting the child go" vein)

Butterfly Kisses is the song requested by both my daughters. Too bad I don't play piano or sing that high. Daughters by John Mayer gets played a lot at weddings lately. I always liked Joshua Kadison's Beautiful In My Eyes.

Thanks all for the suggestions, I've definitely got some listening to do. Butterfly Kisses was the one song my daughter said she didn't want played. Go figure. W2 ... you make a very valid point ... but they who are in charge aren't letting me get off that easy. One of my boys suggested I Loved Her First by Heartland, and it's a good one.

There are times I wish I had just given them the cash and told them to elope. ;)

I suppose The Wedding Song by Paul Stookey is out of the question. That was our generation. I was told a few years ago that it was overdone, but I haven't heard it in years. Maybe because I go to lots more funerals than weddings. Anyway, I think it's the perfect wedding song.

I cut my teeth on public performance with "The Wedding Song". How can it be old?

How can it be old? Same way you and I are Woodrow.

Bobbo, does your daughter have any preference or is she leaving it up to you? What about Kim?

It's entirely up to me ... except for what they do not want and their ultimate right to veto. But since I'm paying the DJ, I have my own little corner of influence. ;) I keep coming back to "I Knew the Bride" by Nick Lowe. Hehe. That ought to liven up the festivities.
