Alaskan Fly Guy just sold me his Ute. It is on its way from Alaska and the check is in the mail as soon as I find his address. My wife is actually getting used to this obsession. I can't wait.

I was just trying to figure out if I could make space on the wall next to the other 2 12 fretters. I'm starting to feel badly that some don't get played as much as they deserve. I think that's a bad sign.

That's what I figured. I just went downstairs and played the 99 Collector's, just so I wouldn't feel like selling it. I'm sure the Ute will get played a bunch. The others may get jealous. I have a long way to go before I'm worthy of these guitars.

Nice going Mark. As far as room on the wall and guitars not getting played, it's like phases of the moon. It just keeps changing but seems to always go thru the same cycle. Phase 1: you think you "need" some certain model so you somehow justify it to SWWSIYBTMG. Phase 2: you start to feel guilty that you don't play the other guitars that you already owned. So you rationalize that it's better to sell them to someone who will play them. Phase 3: you feel bad about the empty space on the wall. Phase 4: you fill the space with some new "must have". Then the who cycle repeats. I've sold off a lot of guitars that I swore I would never part with. I'm lucky to have bought some that I never thought would be possible. It all balances out in the end. Enjoy your U681.

Dave

PS - Mark, At SOME point you have NO excuse not to finish learning Classical Gas. When you visited my house you were up to measure 24. That was a LONG time ago.

Welcome to the UTE club Mark!!

I'll bet you wind up playing the U681T more than any of your others. It'll fit right in with the Folklore and the Classic.

Good news Mark!
We'll compare notes. (pun intended)
I am fasinated by the top on this guitar. Sometimes when BrianT and I play, I'll thump out the beat with my baby finger to start the song. That top is very drum-like. It feels very delicate like fine china and almost paper-thin compared to a wood top. I'm almost afraid to tap it too hard even with just my baby finger.
BTW...Is the textured top thinner than the cross weave top???

OK, Dave. Translate SWWSIYTBMG. I'm just barely into phase 2. And I learned Classical Gas all the way through, but I usually forget a couple spots. Thanks to StephenT28 I have a couple more Jim Croce's to learn.

Other than a Utahian / Coloradan Indian, What's a Ute?

Model U681T...only about 100 were made. I hear they are becoming hard to find.
"UTE" is the nickname we made up for it.
Here is a link to the specs.

Mark, congrats! Is this why you've been struggling with what to bring to Portland??

Yes, David. Too many guitars, not enough room. I'd like to bring something that the other people haven't had a chance to play, but it would also be cool to compare 1537s and with Tim's 1547 and compare the 87 Collector's with his Book Elite. I just need to get together again with Tim. He also has a 1763 that would be nice to compare to my 1713.

The first reference I found to Uterus was by Jeff W. The second was by Schroeder. Seems appropriate. I couldn't find who was the first to shorten it to Ute.

That would be Jeff. He used it constantly and after a while we could no longer ignore him....so it became the "unofficial" moniker.

I reffered to the collective "we" because I do not know if there is one particular member who coined the phrase.
If I'm wrong...I stand corrected.
I certainly don't want to get on the wrong side of the proverbial "them".

Nice pickup, Mark, and a very special guitar for your first Adamas. I have never had the pleasure of seeing a Ute in person and am looking forward to hearing you play some Jim Croce with it. What a way to celebrate the holiday!

You know where to find me, Tim. Last year I was up in Moscow all the time, but I don't think we've been up to visit my daughter since she graduated. This year Portland seems to be the place for us to visit.

Credit belongs to Schroeder.

I might have used it first on the board, but I believe it was only after our disturbed compatriot from the UK used the terms in some email exhanges

This may be confusing, since I changed the title of this thread, but my wife just emailed me and told me "my new baby just arrived". It took me a second to figure out that she meant I have an almost new U681T. I hate it when I have to work, instead of being home to play with a new toy.
I'll try to take pictures and post a full report this weekend. I might have to wait until next Wednesday though, since I leave town for 3 days starting Sunday.
