On Sunday night I went to see the movie “U.S. vs. John Lennon”. It was incredibly good. Basically a documentary (without the moore-ovian fact-twisting dribble) of the years 1969 to 1974 and governments growing uneasiness with the impact that John Lennon was having on the political scene and how the gov’t was trying to deport him. Background that with the Vietnam war protests, civil unrest, Kent State, Democratic convention, etc. and you get the idea. It was time that a lot of us on this board were in our formative high school and college years. The memories are stunning.
The music clips are amazing. No Ovations to be seen. John played various Gibsons and Martins. Plus a dandy National Resophonic on “John Sinclair”. Great footage. The video of John, Yoko and Tom Smothers playing “Give Peace A Chance” in bed is worth the theater admission alone. Forget all the political BS, this movie is a SERIOUS musical tour de force on its own.
The only downside of course is Yoko. She holds the keys to all this treasure trove of video and would only allow it’s use if there was no mention whatsoever or Paul McCartney or Julian Lennon. Plus Yoko does WAY, WAY to much interview and commentary. But that’s the price you have to pay.
I would strongly urge you to go see this movie.

Did you happen to catch their Austin City Limits performance? They had a couple dozen people dressed up in furry animal costumes surrounding the stage, waving those huge spotlight/flashlight things around...and they covered War Pigs. Heh. |

I remember the days of getting up to pick up the turn table arm, to skip over her BS songs, whenever they appeared on Lennon's albums. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm a Beatle junkie, and will do it on netflix. Is it a Yoko Ono production or someone independent? |

| I'm 45 very soon now and so far in the 35 years or so of Musical knowledge and conversations (about music in general) with friends and fellow musicians, as well as watching all the media people and shows concerning the Fab Four and all things Beatles. Not once, Not once! in my knowledge has anyone ever said that they, nor anyone they ever met say, they LIKED Yoko Ono....
Now how can that many people be wrong?

This woman is a creap and for the life of me I do not understand how John, with as musically creative as he was, could have invloved this strange creature so much in "His" music. She did and does not have one creative bone in her nasty little body and I sure can't wait until she is out of the information loope concerning John and his music. I'd love to see an unbiased life and times of this guy.
I did not aagree with all his political views and to be honest all he ever did was use his image and talk a lot about utopia and peace and dispaly his politics he did not have that much of an impact on anyone in the end. So I could care shit less about his views just like I do not care about any entertainers views on these subjects....I did like his music and I do often wonder what great things he would still be contributing to the musical world. Like so many great musicians who died way before their time it is a real loss.
Just out of curiosity does anyone in here think Yoko has anything to offer to anyone?? She should just live off John's earnings and stop managing a great musicans lost life and interjecting her prejudices every chance she gets. She did enough of it when John was alive.....
Sorry if I am to hard on her. Not!

Did yoko write it? probably not probably john did with clapton but it is still a good groove. I bought a bunch of the yoko stuff just to have it. I thought beatles stuff and yoko stuff would be collectible. who knows. but is it any stranger than tangerine dream or brian eno or stockhausen? I kinda understand the mindset.
one time i was at a jam and we played cold turkey. after that I went into don't worry kyoko... the bass player kept up with me and KNEW what tune it was. All I could do was laugh, cause I thought I was the only one who knew the tune. |

| Well Al First time I got you to bite in a while and I have tried... So I guess I have a new tune to learn on the bass for ya at the next jam I do plan to make. But we just don't know what Jam that might be. I am batting a big fat ZERO so far making it to one. My loss too This one looked like a lot of fun just like the rest you've had.

Hey; if you say it's a tune to do for fun, well then to prove I am open to new things I'll give the crazy old broads song a whirl! Hope I can find it on the net.... I'd hate to buy it and give the old cheap creep any more money.
Don't know about a eulogy but I do know
I want a head stone even if I ask I just be burned because it is cheaper for my family.
On it I'd like a little epitath that reads
"Well that sure was interesting"

It consisted of a train car shot full of bullet holes parked in front of the DIA (on the lawn). At dusk, massive spotlights inside the car would switch on and, so, shafts of light would come out of aforementioned bulletholes. All of which was accompanied by a 'soundtrack' that consisted of atonal music with lyrics sung in a language I've never heard before. And moaning. And the sounds of chains. And other weird stuff.
You can read about the 'sculpture' here , although their description doesn't really capture the full flavor. I think she offered a lot to the people of Detroit through her art.

Location: SoCal | I hate the thought of defending Yoko Ono, but there are a couple of things to consider.
First, when John was alive, it was fairly well known that she handled his business and money. From what I read, she did well, while he wasn't terribly capable or interested in it.
Second, she provided him with stability, which he badly needed. For a guy who was a major rebel for a lot of years, he was happy staying at home and raising a son. Something to be said for that.
Last, whether we see something positive in Yoko or not, John did. If you are going to respect his music and who he was, you should respect his choices as well.
But having said all that, I thought she sounded like sh!t when she sang, and I never ever understood her art.... |

But honestly, they sure seemed like two pretty damn in-love people and who are we to wish anything less for someone. Yes, I'd rather eat a dead donkey's duck than listen to her sing. But so what.
