With all due respect, Mr. Ovation's thread a few posts down about 'which artists you like' seemed a bit too galactic for meaningful comment. But one response inspired this idea: What is/are some of the most meaningful song lyrics that either stuck in your head or actually meant something in your life? Two of mine are:

Stuck in head: "Weird scenes inside the gold mine..." (Doors 'The End')

Actually mean something: "I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become . . ." (From Toto's 'Africa')

"And I need you more than want you,
and I want you for all time...."

Jimmy Webb's Wichita Lineman

I heard James Taylor this morning on Good Morning America sing it. Very good....

They shoot without shame
In the name of a piece of dirt
For a change of accent
Or the color of your shirt

Better the pride that resides
In a citizen of the world
Than the pride that divides
When a colorful rag is unfurled

Greetings from Sodom
How we wish you were here
The weather's getting warmer
Now that the trees are all cleared
There's no time for a conscience
And we recognize no crime
Yeah we got dogs and Valvoline
It's a pretty damn good time

Don't forget that I remember
Those words of truth that turned cold
Your promises of love forever
Is like a story left untold
You can't hide what evil's done
Now the devil's got your soul
I remember girl

Stuck in head:
"...and if California falls into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I'm convinced this hotel will be standing
Until I pay my bill."

Meaningful:
"Oh no, you never let go
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, you never let go
In every high and every low
Oh no, you never let go
Lord, you never let go of me."

Whatcha you going to do with your life
now that I'm leaving?
are you believing
That you'll make it on your own?

Didn't you believe what I said
or was it just madness?
You're living in sadness
and you'll be all alone.

Too many to list.
How about (for stuck in the head)
I don't care if it rains or freezes,
Long as I got my plastic jesus stuck up there next to my pair of fuzzy dice.
I can go about a million miles per hour, as long as I got that almight power ....

I met a woman, she had a mouth like yours.
She knew your life,
She knew your devils and your deeds.
She said go to him, stay with him if you can,
But be prepared to bleed.
You are in my blood like holy wine.
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh, I could drink a case of you
And still, I would be on my feet
I would still be on my feet

Or if they said that I was just a fool.

I actually do have one that I think of when I see all the campaign ad's and all the rhetoric from the parties this time of year. From Joe Walsh and his great album SO WHAT; Turn to Stone.

"Backyard people when they work all day
Tired of the Speeches and the way that the
reasons keep changing... Just ta make the words rhyme"

And when I think of mortality, and the worth of my life..... it is Chris Squire's solo piece called "Silently Falling" that has lyrics that are timeless to me. Look em up or listen to the song in it's entirety the lyrics are pretty meaningful and you gotta love the Hammond-Bass jam in there, that is a lot of fun to play by the way.

OMA LOL you reminded me of Tull..... "Meanwhile back in the year 1 when you belong to no one....you didn't stand a chance... son.... if your pants were undone.

One of the tunes that has always stuck in my head:

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Funny how it's never quite the way they say it is,
And it's not that they really lie,
It's just that there's always two sides to everything,
And only one side's in the light.

Well I was reading through this thread thinking to myself that here's another one for the "too much to list" category because I got all kinds of lyrics stuck in my head that mean a lot to me.

Anyway, I got to Arthur's quote and it all came back. I could hear the music and feel it too. That line and the rest of the lyrics from that song pretty much sums up an earlier part of my life.

It also underscores, for me at least, how useless the education system can be - they hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool.

The only thing that I learned in high school was how not to play the game and I'm pretty sure they would have said I was a fool if I'd bothered to ask. Odd thing though, once I got away from those losers, I pretty much breezed through university as well as law school and got my call to the Bar w/out busting a sweat.

My favourite line from Wind Up would be:

I don't believe you.
You have the whole damn thing all wrong!

I've seen the likes of you before,
Come and go through a revolving door,
Time'll bear witness to what-ever's in store...
Pointed fingers tend to get sore.
