Am I right in guessing I'm not the only guy round here who's been confronted with: "You care more for the guitars than for me!"?
I try to explain that it's two different things, but don't know if it's the best answer, at least it's not always convincing.

Okay, I'm rarely serious, but...

Guitars are guitars, but people are people. If I thought that my wife felt like I put guitars ahead of her or the family, I'd unload every axe in a second. No matter how much I may get attached to "stuff", keeping a marriage strong is on a whole different plane of importance.

Love one woman many guitars. The good news is at least you don't collect cars! A good woman is more important than a guitar. The best thought I have is show her you love it doesn't cost a thing.

I've heard it.

I've been able to speak through my answer with my (now ex-) girlfriend since... it was "Well, I have known them longer...".

In case you're wondering, I don't ever wonder why she's now my ex! She wasn't "the one", nor was I "the one" for her.

I've met "the one", quite some time ago, and if there was ever a choice to make, my collection would be on Sell/Trade and eBay in seconds. That was how I knew...

Hmm, my guitar never tells me how to dress, how to talk, how to eat, how to behave, never wants to hide the remote, never over spends, never gets upset with what I say or how I say it... You bet there are times I pay more attention to the guitars - seems to me that it's just self preservation.

Sorry HobbyPicker - I have no better way to explain it - I just usually answer with a dumbass stare until she leaves the room muttering under her breath that I am a dumbass!!

The next day consists of me grovelling and reverting back to my normal position of wife worship. But for that few minutes....

I keep the door locked to the basement studio, then play a life-long game of hide and seek. More serious, she has her circle of friends and activities and I have mine, then we have a large circle of joint friends and activities. Sometimes the circles overlap, and sometimes they don't. Apportioning the right amount of time within each of those circles, however, is necessary and healthy for maintaining a good relationship on the home front.

Best advice I was ever given: "Never complain. Never explain."

If my wife said that to me, my answer would be "At the moment, yes."

My guitars have got me more girls than my wife has got me guitars.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

('Course the answer these days is always, "Thanks, I'm honoured at the offer.")

HP, I'm pretty much in the same camp as the Professor, except that his basement studio is much nicer than mine and I share mine with the exercise equipment and my wife's huge collection of aerobics tapes.
Here's a hint for you that may not work, but there is not much downside. The next time she is doing something by herself, bug the hell out of her. Be nice about it, like ask her questions, show interest, get cuddly, or all those things that supposedly convey interest in her. When she tells you to leave her alone, go back to your guitars. If she enjoys the attention, you may just end up in bed, but I suspect that would be OK. Then you'll just get the old line that all you think about is sex. In the next chapter I will tell you the appropriate responses for that line.

I normally just fake an old injury acting up. Anyone ever see John Cleese in "Fawlty Towers"???

"Arrrhhhhh .... the old trick knee is acting up, .. took a bit of shrapnel in Korea you know"

I point out that no guitar has kept me loyal for 27 years. That I have spent way more money on her than on the guitars. That I do, if you add it up (and count sleep time) spend more time with her.

Then I abandon all that worthless crap and get out of the studio, take her out to dinner, love on her a bunch and stay away from the other girls for about 24 hours. More if that's what it takes.

Jeff:

If you can say that with a straight face, go for it!

Remind me, Jeff. Aren't you single? I can't imagine how that can be, unless it's because you understand women so well that you deliberately stay away.
I have to be way more subtle or my wife knows it's a bunch of crap.
And I can't use the line about loyalty. I've had an Ovation slightly longer than I've had a wife. She bought it for me. They're both still keepers.

Translation for the married guy: Sometimes I'd like to grab you by the neck and...your roundback, wide hips and deep bowl won't stay on my knee anymore...and talk about sustain, once you get started, you won't shut up!

My wife has never complained about me spending more time with guitars than with her. I'm not sure if that's because I don't spend more time with the guitars, or whether it's because she doesn't mind.
