What the hell did somebody do to it? Was this something that the factory put out?

That's the very RARE Viper "Leprosy" model!

....either that or it's a pic from the best-selling book "Fun Projects You Can Do with your Circular Saw".

That is a basement custom job. First get very drunk, then go to the beasment with your guitar, Then drink some more and get great ideas. Then grab the handiest saw and go to work. Make sure you finish before you pass out. That way in the morning you can look at your masterpiece and say..."Fhut Da Wuck was I thinking?"

I've never seen this guitar before and that's a good thing

Herr Frankenstein gave up on humans and has started on guitars. Algore has dredged the ebay for dead parts and delivered a stinking scrabrous mess to his master to bring to life and resell on the web, man the torches before it is to late.

There are actually people bidding on this piece of....art. I wonder if that's because of a pure aesthetic connection, or because the word "custom" was in the description.

Ok, I'll be "the asker". I've sent this message to the seller: "Where did you get this guitar? I have spoken to several Ovation people and they have never seen one like it or
know anything about it. A curious luthier :-)".
Now if he replies, maybe we can all get a good laugh :D

(PS. here is a recent purchase by the current "HIGH bidder" PURCHASE ;) )

The sad thing is that I actually kind of like the way it looks. Somebody is bidding 2C's for it. Out of my league. Dave

Here is what the guy selling it replied to my question:"Hi,
I got it from the original owner. He told me that this
was a first run viper and later they changed the body
style to the more round one.I recall seeing them now
in the store at the time they came out and thinking
how weird they were."

I'd say the original owner forgot to mention that he sawed up the original body (if he ever had one)
and made this "first run" body from a scaffolding plank in his basement.

As we all can see this guy is a Lucking Fier.
The shape of the Weeper and Schreecher is the same perifery as the bigger relative, the magical roundness, just smaller.
Maybe we should give Lucky the benefit of the doubt, that's probably what he was told when he bought his gem.

I took another look and determined that it really is a Viper. I'm sure it was used by it's owner to fend off a chain saw attack. He surely survived and sanded down the damage. That guitar is an Ovation hero, having saved it's master's life, then been cast out because of it's ugly scars. A 1000 unit collector's series solid bodies should be built in memorium. (in blue with a bluebird decal). Just proves there's a story behind every story if you look hard enough.

Sorry about the Frankenstein remark, his guitars have the Toyler(t) label or something like it (and will leap out of their cases and attack their owners without warning).

"dubyatoo"

I think you are right. I sent the seller an e-mail and told him it wasn't a "REAL" Ovation - some parts perhaps (put together by the original owner) but not made by Ovation.
He responded with this:
"I was starting to wonder myself and the seller came
over tonight to look at some of my collection
and I asked him about it. I believe he isn't running a
line on me(HE MAY NOT KNOW) but has told me that
guitar magazine had a picture of a similar piece as I
now possess and that he assured me it was the real
deal. So, if guitar magazine( and I will find the article SOME HOW) has another picture of this how can it be that it isn't?"

Guess you can't prevent ignorance when it strikes so often, (and he added this PS : "p.s. I have been drinking a nice scotch I bought on
special at walgreens."

Vintage film question, I make my scotch by carefully mixing coca cola, medical alcohol, and iodine and age it for a few minutes by my wrist watch, where did I learn that? Hint "Who DID it--WHOOO DID IT???" Probably Walgreen's does too.

Mr. Bob (er I mean Bailey)

This Viper is similar to that scotch

BTW, has anyone noticed that there's actually a four nice Vipers up for auction? Granted the Michael Jackson model is a little too much of an abomination for my tastes, but there's a yellow/cream color as well as three natural finishes (two with maple boards) that are quite nice.

Well Folks,
Our scotch drinking seller sold his "Chainsaw Viper", got $285 + shipping for it.
In his earlier e-mail reply to me he said this:
"Further to your 'keeping everything straight'- I too am of that Ilk and cast and will make my buyer aware of these passings". I had told him I wasn't interested in his guitar, only that I hated seeing anyone getting "BURNT" on eBay, so
I hope he was true to his word and tells the guy who bought it that it "might not be a real Viper".

Case Closed............

It was one ugly guitar. By the way, that first sip of 12 year old single malt scotch is almost better than sex. But not quite.
