Location: Australia | I ordered a 1687 Adamas (blue) from the custom shop in June and now it's on it's way.
I must say I'm pretty excited about getting my paws on this one.

Location: Atlanta,Ga. | Al, last time i spoke with willie he was in the eng. dept working on protos and other experiments..Although he may work on some unusuall models ,i have never known ovation to have a "custom shop".When i think of custom shop ,i think of whole separate dept with several employees only working on custom orders.Example:martin,gibson and fender..I think willie works on some guitars because he is talented and has a knack for it but im sure he would not consider his dept "the custom shop"...Although a real honest to goodness custom shop wouldnt be a bad idea..Willie does great work and is a super nice guy...And to top it off he is GREEK ....... |

Whether it's built in a room that actually has a "Custom Shop" sign hanging on the door is irrelevant to me.
It's a one off built the way I want it.
That's "Custom Shop" enough for me.

Location: Scotland | "Custom Shop" is yet more marketing speak, coined by Fender to justify having a team of highly skilled luthiers try to duplicate what Leo's unskilled workforce threw together in the 50's, and to get a premium price for using materials which by the 90's they deemed no longer cost-effective for production guitars. Check the website, Ovation doesn't use the phrase "custom shop" however they do offer "Special Orders" and "Custom Orders". The point here is that it is possible to order a guitar from the factory with non-production specification. Whether it is made on the same line as the production stuff or not isn't really the issue. The fact is that an original-style Adamas is not currently available, so by definition richardd's guitar is "Custom Made" I have been discussing a "personal" non-production "custom order" guitar with the factory for a while & I should have it in a few months.

Pay no attention to this envious bunch of parade rainers, just let us all know when you get your guitar and if possible post some pictures. If it is custom made does it matter where the assembly is done. My sense of reality is heightened by a factor of ten by my new computer, so expect some astounding insight into these matters.

Location: 6 String Ranch | Richardd, tell them all to sod off!!! Your guitar should be great. Ovation has always made custom guitars. Scholz double neck, the 9 string etc. Actually the custom shop is on the 7th floor, thats's where you wound up after you were in the bell tower for a while, but then again it was the times. Willie is an excellent mechanic for gitters, and Sam, although he is greek, he also is totally into Nationals. |

Location: NJ | Perhaps we should look into the feasibility of an OFC "custom model"? Maybe a SlotHead re-issue?
Theoretically, 12-15 custom guitars SHOULD be more cost-efficient to produce than a "one-sie. two-sie".
Probably the HARDEST thing to do would be to get everyone to AGREE on things like features, colors, etc. Perhaps a "poll"? |

Your custom Folklore sounds like it should be a magnificent instrument.You've obviously put alot of thought into it's features.
There is nothing out of the ordinary about the 1687 I've ordered. I wanted it to be the same as the 96' model I had stolen.
Mine should be here on Monday.

Where is it that you are going to call in on monday? Some place is going to be scratching their head and saying "Bill called in sick, who the hell is Bill?" I thought your retirement had become permanent. If I call in sick, it sounds like this "Dear I think I'm sick, would you take the dog out?"
This new computer is so fast that my posts appear before I can even think about them, so excuse me if they appear to be off the top of my head compared to the well thought out posts you are used to.

How anyone could complain about the quality of USA Ovations is beyond me.
The factory setup is perfect and in tune out of the box, no sharp fret ends or any sign of sub par workmanship.
It sounds enormous, better than my orginal 96' model Adamas, very loud and very sweet and dare I say it very woody.
Time to a/b it against my other acoustics.
Well, the Custom Legend pled "no contest" and the Taylor 714 is complaining that the Adamas's strings are fresher.
Plugging into the Optima preamp is equally rewarding.
How a guitar made of so many synthetic materials can sound so natural and "acoustic" truly baffles me.
One point of contention however is that this guitar has an ebony fretboard and my original had walnut.
I did give the dealer a picture of my original guitar and the model number, never thinking the fretboard material was a issue. The only old style Adamas I've ever seen with ebony was Adrian Legg's.
Anyway I'm not sure if I'll persue the matter with the dealer.After my initial suprise I'm finding the ebony much smooth under the fingers than the old walnut board and it certainly won't get grubby like walnut.
Anyway I'm happy it's here and playing it constantly.
I'll try and work out how to post a picture.
It certainly is a beautiful guitar. |
