The first one I actually learned from maybe five sessions with a guitar teacher (before Mom pulled the plug because I didn't practice) was "Two Brothers" (about Civil War . . . "Two brothers on their waaaaay, one wore blue and one wore gray" First song that I WANTED to learn and did: House of the Rising Sun. I practiced the pee out of that puppy. followed closely by Wipe Out and Gloria Song I most regret learning: Puff. Having had daughters, I must have played that thing 5 million times. I probably hate performing it more than Peter Paul and Mary.

If memory serves me it was called "Get the !#%#$ away from my guitar and stay out of my room you little @$#$%!" The chorus went something like "Mom, why didn't you learn to practice birth control earlier?"

That's when I learned Bad Moon Rising, followed by Loud Mary. Johnny Johnson: an inspiring and brilliant teacher! (also gave me my first paying gig. Hired me to play bass in his band one year into lessons.)

Joined: February 2008 Posts: 747 | I started playing when I was in grade 6 which would have been mid 1960s I guess - maybe a little later. I could read basic notes then and I remember picking out some of the songs from the class music book while other kids sang. I Don't remember the names of any of the songs though and chords were a mystery at that time. I had an elementary guitar lessons book as well but I don't remember what was in it either. A little later I learned to play House of the Rising Sun which was really a pretty good first song because once you learned those chords you could mix them around for your own stuff and the picking part of that song was good practice too. The lead intro to Secret Agent Man was in there somewhere as well..lol

Joined: June 2006 Posts: 106 Location: UK | Classical Gas. One evening a year or so ago I was watching Frasier on TV. It was the one where he's re-arranging his furniture while Classical Gas is playing. Next day I discovered TAB (I'd never seen tab before) I downloaded the tab for CG, bought my Ovation and started playing... (again) OK, I did 'play' just a little way back in the 70's but the internet didn't exist and the only written notation was proper music with those little chord symbols for strummers. I can't sing so preferred picking the intros (Dust in the Wind etc) but I'd also discovered cars and girls so I'd only ever pick up a guitar if I happened to be visiting someone who had one lying around (and I'd play House of the rising sun followed by the intro to Dust in the wind.. Yawn) but basically rarely ever touched a guitar till the day after hearing classical gas on Frasier.
