I have made many friends here, some I've traded instruments or instrument parts with. Some I've played music with. Some have invited me into their homes to stay. Some I've gotten drunk with. Others have needed parts or advice & I've provided it because I want to & I was able. You yourself have emailed me with questions on several occasions which I took the time to answer as thoroughly and accurately as I know how. You posted in the sell/trade section of this board that you were looking for a catalog. I had one and sent it to you along with another I had spare. You asked how much I wanted. I told you "nothing, just send me the postage when you get them". Months later I'm still waiting. I ain't hurting for a few bucks but that illustrates perfectly what you do around here, which is take, take, take & contribute absolutely NOTHING of any worth. Now fuck off and leave me alone. |

Hebert, if you could have been bothered to use the search function you would have found that Bill covered this in some depth in March 2002. Hope you don't find it too boring
"In the beginning.......
There were two layers of fiberglass cloth that had a perscribed amount of resign poured on it in a heated press
And it was called lyrachord
And in 1974 there was the coming of the applause. And its bowl was made in a compression heated mould from a mixture of polyester resign and chopped glass fibres
And it was called SMC
but the New hartford Ovations stayed with the cloth
In 1982 there was an experiment of making guitars in North Carolina and all the bowls were made there from the SMC
And in 1985 the experiment ended and all the bowls went to Astabula Ohio. Reifnements were made in the material
And it was called HMC
And that's where it is today
Now as a further note the cloth bowls were about 35%glass when all was said and done. The SMC(sheet molding compound)is a layer of resign that looks like taffy and had 1" chopped fibers inbedded in it. Those bowls are also about 35% glass. The HMC is made with fibers 1.5" long and are also the same percentage. We found that the longer fibers sounded better, more like the cloth bowls that were a PITA to make. Material costs werren't a real factor but mfg and scrap rates were. HMC was better on both.
There was a phase over from cloth the SMC/HMC. The Adamas 2 were all SMC from the beginning. the Adamas 1 was the last to switch from cloth.
All things being equal the cloth probably sounds better. But things are never equal are they? The finish, top thickness, grain, brace patterns, neck material, how it's joined to the bowl, type of rosette, bridge material all affect the sound.
So Sam I've heard cloth bowls that were last in the bow-wow 500 and HMCs that were in the top 10.

Location: UK | What about the one I found in a shop called Sounds City (I think that was its name, somewhere along the Charing Cross Road) in about 1971 which had a round wooden back - sorta striped - made out of strips of contrasting wood?
The sales assistant said it was a special, like a Josh White or something (note, not a Josh White but as if it was an endorsed model like a Josh White).
I've often wondered if I dreamed the whole thing. It was a long time ago..... |

Location: Scotland | Could have been a K.Yairi, they did a wooden roundback but I'm pretty sure it was introduced much later than '71. My best guess it would have been by a Brit luthier, several dabbled in lute-style construction wooden roundbacks including Nigel Thornbury & Melvyn (Mervyn?) Hiscox. Ovation employees have made some wooden roundbacks but the company hasn't officially produced any as far as I'm aware. |

I'm certain it was an Ovation.
The reason is a bit longwinded and you can skip over this unless you want to wallow in nostalgia with me.
You probably remember the time when the guitar shops in London stretched all the way from Denmark Street down most of Charing Cross Road. I mean, you could easily spend a day or more shopping for guitars!
I must have been about sixteen going on seventeen, which is the summer of '71. I'd made a ton of money selling ice cream on the beaches of a resort called Hayling Island on the south coast. My dad, who was quite supportive of my musical efforts promissed that if I put up half the money he would make up the rest to buy me a Gibson or similar acoustic.
Just about that time Ovation seemed to appear in the shops - they were probably on sale before in the UK but in the provinces where I lived we got things a bit later. Anyway, I instantly fell for the Balladeer but my father was dead against buying a "plastic" guitar, gawd bless 'im.
So, given his prejudices finding an Ovation with a "wooden" back in that shop was almost a half-way house. However, I also recall that it was out of my price range and also I think I had a natural affinity for a proper roundback and not a custom wooden jobbie. In the end, through a mate of a mate, I found someone who was selling second-hand a late 60s J45 for £100 and bought my first ever US made guitar (retiring my Eko Ranger 6 forever).
Of course, now that I can make my own financial decisions I've got two great Ovations - and I've got a hankering for an Elite or Legend 12 string, so I'm sorta making up for lost time!
