After my 1537 had the bridge pop off, I've kept all of my Ovations snug in their cases instead of on the wall. I then used the wall hangers for electrics only. This morning I go downstairs and find my Peavey T-60 on the floor. It's somewhat of a heavy guitar and the solid oak wood part of the hanger just split down the middle letting loose the support arm. At first all looked OK, these guitars are as tough as they come. Closer inspection revealed that the neck cracked. T-60's have two-piece necks and the crack is only through one half, but going up under the nut. I didn't have the time to examine it further, but it looks stable and fixable.

I like having guitars out in the open where you can just grab and play, but this really has me re-evaluating things.

So, a word to the wise. The best place to keep a guitar is in the case. Live and learn. I'm sure Moody will agree.

I love wall hangers. That's how I got my FD14.

With the people in my house, I'd be nuts to leave out my gits. When I was single, not a problem, but now ... no way.

I only have about 10-15 out at any one time but secured on Herculese hangers. All the rest are safe in cases.

I have 7 cases stuffed in a 4 x 6 closet which requires an unmanly little dance to get one out.
If I kept my guitars in there I'd never play them.

All of them are out on wall hangers, except the 2 electrics that are on stands. All string swing hangers except for 3 12 fretters on Hercules, because they are angled to fit in a smaller space. All the hangers are mounted into a mahogany board, mounted into the studs of the wall. I know I wouldn't play them as much if they were in cases and they wouldn't get the controlled humidity that I have in the room. I don't have kids or anyone else for that matter that ever go downstairs to the mancave.

The cat is not allowed in the basement anymore, unless you come to visit again.

You should see my place. Guitars everywhere. They're all out (except the 1778LX which has the holes plugged and is in the case ready to play out at a moment's notice).

And they almost all get played and very regularly. At least one of em every day.

I just have the one 17yo here now, and he's finally come to respect instruments, so I think we're good. I check the hangers regularly and pull on 'em to see if there's stress stuff or things loosening.

I only use metal hangers these days because they don't split. However, there may be a few wood blocks here and there so thanks for the warning. An inspection over the weekend is in order. Did you keep the room humidified, or maybe that's not a problem in NY?

Hey Mitch, you gonna approach Chip about that neck? He might be able to take care of that for ya.

I keep mine in the cases all the time. I've got two kids (11 & 13) and even though they respect the instruments they don't always think about them during wrestling bouts and various ball games.

I'm also right across the road from the ocean and we get a lot of salt in the air here so I feel much more comfortable having them safe and snug in their beds.

Now that you mention it, that might be the best way to get it fixed.

For those who don't know about T-60's, they were designed by Chip Todd. He no longer works for Peavey but has his on shop down in Texas. He's an especially talented electric guitar luthier.

Thanks for the advice Damon.

Got 10 hanging 3 on stands and 8 in cases.

The ones in the cases never get played and will most likely be sold sometime in the near future.

Mine all go back in cases. I'm also in an environment where they would suffer if left out. Plus all guitars left out on stands or hangars — in my experience anyway — are much more prone to suffering finish checks or cracks, not to mention that they get really dirty.

I remember those old Peavey axes. Nice looking but it was like having an anvil around your neck. I'm surprised it didn't just rip the hangar right out of the wall.

I really like having guitars out on stands or hangars. The Preacher has a pillow under it in case the hangar lets loose, but it is a Hercules so it should be secure. All the hangars are secured into studs, not just into the wallboard.

When a guitar goes out to a show or to a friend's hose, it is always in a case unless it is being played. I worry about people, kids, and animals more than I worry about the hangars breaking.

Rule of thumb: never own a guitar you wouldn't be afraid to break over a drunks head.

Thus, my collection. I especially appreciate the new solid metal-body Johnson reso.....

(my sig doesn't mention the Strat and P-bass copy, those are weapons ....and I'd really like a Tele w/ quick release strap. But I'll wait for the perfect Viper.)

Phil, if you're beefy enough to wield it, there's no better musical weapon than a T-60.

Well, maybe a T-40

Cases, all the time; most of you know that Gertrude (1111-4) has an extra bridge-to-purfling "sound vent" that was the result of an overly-enthusiastic wrestling match. Since 4 of the 5 Ovations are vintage, and my Guild classical almost an antique, I just don't take any chances anymore.

3 on wall hangers for wall candy (the Twins and the Custom Legend) and two on Hercules floor stands to grab easy and do some strummin' (right now it is the '05 Collector's and the 2080, but they rotate frequrntly). 'Cept for the 2080, all of 'em need to breathe and vibrate, and if I leave them in the cases, they don't get enough exercise... kinda like me :D
