I'll start the ball rolling...

in fact I have 2, the 84 and 93 Collectors.

Then when I want to really treat myself out comes the 03 Collector or 1537.

Dweezil,
Your Choices for "Beater" guitars are awfully Nice one from Pic's I remember seeing.

My "Beater" is my 1112-1 Custom Balladeer.

Sweetwater T...which I'm gonna put up for sale pretty soon.

Then it'll be my 1115.

The one I throw in the truck or the travel trailer is my Academy KA14, even though no one would consider it a beater.

Right now my 0001 Martin. A great little guitar that spent the most part of its life too hot or too cold, but no cracks not many dings. It just has that vintage look.

My collection is too small to have a beater. The first halfway decent guitar my parents bought me in 1968 or so was a Yamaha acoustic. The bridge has peeled up and it is unplayable. The next worst instrument is my mint 6778LX (still for sale...).

Mine is the Applause I got in '75 or so. Still going strong.

For electric, a Strat copy. I don't let just anyone play my Breadwinner - it's too cool. :)

I don't really have any beater guitars. Maybe, currently, my 1537? But oddly enough, I'm having a beater built......

You know, "beater" is such a derrogatory term. I like to think more in terms of

- guitar I just grab and play
- not worried about a stand or a case
- lean it against the chair, wall, amp, whatever
- never wipe off the fingerprints
- take it anywhere, pass it to anyone
- never worry about humidity, scratches, etc.

For me that would be the Academy and the 430SS. The academy for obvious reasons. Shit I sent it to a party once along with a box of dry erase markers and instructions to "have it it". I can't think of too many guitars that people would do that to and not blink. Dut despite being a "beater", it's actually a kick ass sounding and playing guitar. Definately in the mid part of the Ovation line. Way better than a lot of Legend and Elite type guitars.

The 430SS is the other one but for different reasons. It's hard to call a $1500 guitar, with the worlds best pre-amp system, a "beater". But it's just my do-everything, take-anywhere, and never worry about it guitar. In the last 8 months since I got it it has easily 20x the playing hours on it than any other guitar in the house. It's not "the best" guitar in the house by a long shot but it's a guitar that I just always gravitate to and it never disappoints. If you had to buy one all around guitar on a 1500 budget there might not be a better choice out there.

OK, Beat On !!!

I'm guessing that the 430SS is a Tak?

Yeah, it's a Tak. I've been looking at the 430SS for a while now. It has a purdy burst too.

oh, beater... um if we're going by Dave's standards, acoustically, the 1117 Deluxe Balladeer, plugged in the 1778LX which has been designated the playing out guitar (all bung holes are plugged, and it stays in the case ready to run out the door at a moment's notice)

- guitar I just grab and play - yup
- not worried about a stand or a case - hangs on wall
- lean it against the chair, wall, amp, whatever - yes but carefully
- never wipe off the fingerprints - yup
- take it anywhere, pass it to anyone - yup but in OHSC
- never worry about humidity, scratches, etc - erm no

I have an old Yamaha that I call the "house guitar". It's the one I'll let anyone play who comes into the shop for a jam, loan out to friends who need a guitar to play at the Flatiron on last minute notice, and never have to worry about. It has low, comfortable action and a big booming bass. A lot of people have asked about buying it, but I won't sell it. Then I wouldn't have a "beater" anymore!

Mine would be a the Martin 000X1. Almost as bullet proof as an Ovation.

The only 6 string steel Ovation I own is the 97 Collectors which I might bring to the next jam.

I have a friend/collector in Phoenix who sold me an excellent '92 1767 a few years ago. I heard from him today, he also has his original 80's model 1767 for sale now. I don't have the extra cash now or I'd buy it. It's in very good condition, the neck is straight, the frets are dressed, and the top is aged to a honey color. You could get a very nice 'better than a beater' Legend and original case for 3 to 4 hundred.
If anyone is interested. I'll forward his info. He's a stand-up guy, buys and sells high quality guitars.

I already posted mine but Dave put down all the reasons to which I will add that if either Tak ever went missing or "died" they are immediately replaceable with an equal.

I knew I should have tried the Tak at the jam.
