Location: SoCal | Well, I'm bummed. I went into the local Guitar Center today (Lake Forest CA) and they still don't have any LX's. I was told that they are special order only. Where you could get to them, they had super shallow bowl Celebs and high on the wall they had a modern Adamas, a SSB Custom Legend, an Elite T, and a S771 Balladeer. Of course, you couldn't play them.
Ovation's got a long way to go to overcome the "crappy acoustic sound" syndrome (CASS).
I think I'll go play my 68 Deluxe Balladeer.
By the way, I was exchanging emails over the last couple of days with the individual who was bummed that Ovation told him in their ads, that his current Ovations were no longer any good (can't remember his board name). Very nice guy, but he's moving away from Ovations. He told me what O's he had, and if I were to base my opinion of O's on his guitars, I'd go play something else altogether.
It's going to take awhile for Ovation to overcome CASS. It's gonna be an uphill road. But it's a do-able thing. |

I feel for you. I have yet to find a good assortment within arms reach at any store. I don't regret pulling the trigger sight unseen in February for my instrument. I was ready to rejoin Ovation and it was a great way to jump in.
Elite or the Legend? Just get it. We both understand it doesn't need to be "better" than the others - just a great tasting flavor of ice cream!
I'm hoping to bank about $800 dollars in the next few and start "bottom feeding" Ebay as Tony says. An Adamas 12 string would be a useful tool. Maybe I should just find one in a GC and tell them that if they aren't going to keep it clean and within reach just give me a good price and stick another Celebritny up on the wall.

Location: Denton, Texas | Speaking of 'sound', if we were, I just put Elixer Lights on my newest aquisition and I gotta tell you I got goose pimples and hair standing up on my arms. What a fantastic sounding guitar. It's a 1982 vintage Adamas II 1681-8 Rev Blu Brst. I added a picture of it in my (George)album. It is deep bowl and has that original Adamas sound which is not duplicated in my Adamas CVT or Adamas ME signature 12, (perhaps that was never intended) but it's The Sound that I have been looking for. :) |

I bet it will be quite a while until GC gets an LX. I'm going to have to drive a few hours to play one.
You said you had been e-mailing with the guy who had a problem with Ovation "de-valueing" his collection. I had almost jumped into that thread but decided not to stir the bees nest any further. I did go to his profile and learned that he has a career in finance. That may show why he spins things to a dollar value. I'm sorry that he is moving away from Ovation. If he is looking at guitars as an investment.....well, good luck.

Of course there are other good acoustic brands, but I don't think they have the "value" of those three brands.

Location: Denton, Texas | IMHO I think there are those who think if they pay 50 percent more for a guitar with a wood back and sides that sounds "different" but not necessarily "better" than the Ovation, they are succumbing to the need to feel like they have a superior instrument based on the retail dollar price. This foible of human nature has been kicked around in this forum before,I know. Kaman in his aeronautical expertise and applied genius has eliminated the wood back and sides of the body, replaced by the bowl and put those saved man-hours into the dynamics of sound and bracing engineering and beautiful neck and headstock design, and most importantly the best available materials for the top that either nature or man could provide. (Talk about applied technology, I smiled when I changed the battery on my Adamas II yesterday, as that access port is the same design as the acess inspection plate found on aircraft for checking inside the wings, fuselage etc.)If one prefers the sound of another guitar, that choice is their most honest criteria but that should never diminish those of us who prefer, enjoy and love the Ovation sound, dollars always aside. As beauty is to the eye, isn't sound in the ear of the beholder? Who was it that said...oh, never mind, I'm just an Ovation fan. |

I tend to agree. I like the Ovation sound. I also like the wooden sound (Martin). But I will say this...the Ovation sound is consistent.....the martin sound changes with the weather. My new LX (put on the Elixers as you suggested) is fabulous. I also agree, that the Ovation design seems Aeronautical and reminds one of checking/changing panels. Good analogy!
Actually, I have always thought Kaman was at the cutting edge of a good blend of design (man-made & natural materials) & sound for future guitars; which I believe all guitar manufacturers/makers will have to eventually & seriously consider one day.
Anyway..I have always liked the Ovation; altho I do have different tastes as well.

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I had mentioned this early, but it's worth repeating I think. In the mid-70's when I first a roundback, I figured that was the end of the box guitar. As Rick mentioned at the factory tour... if you want to play in the first 5 frets or so, there are LOTS of choices. If you play above the 5th fret, there really is only one choice. I have been trying out lots of acoustic guitars lately, and many sound great, but only one seems to be consistant all the way up the neck and that's because of the round back.
I may own a wood guitar someday because I might like the look of the wood or the workmanship, but every time I think about spending the money on one... I play a chord low then high up on the neck.... then say to myself... "self.... nevermind." |
