Location: 6 String Ranch | Al, Keep an eye out for Mr Kummer. Rumor has it he'll be there. I'd like to go but have to help watch some neighbors drive a model A pickup truck out of their old store to the new store and consume a roasted pig to celebrate. Tough job but someone has to do it. |

Somebody mentioned MODEL A and roasted pig, if I could go anywhere that's where I would be.
As usual, I will stay in the NM high desert.

Location: NJ | Last year, my partner and I played at a PigRoast put on by one of the local bar/restaurants we always play. In an effort to guard against the possibility of rain, they set up a small tent for shelter. The tent was big enough for three . . my partner Rick, . . . myself, . . . and the pig.
Being the only "non-meat eater" in the group, Rick and Chuck (the owner/chef) made sure that "Mona" (I named her) got the seat of honor right in front of me! It was an especially appealing seat to have as they hacked poor Mona up with a machete (the inside of my CBalladeer STILL smells like a pulled pork sandwich!). I had suggested inserting a quarter stick of dynamite up Mona's ass and giving everyone a fielder's mitt, but . . . .
Some of the "dinner music" consisted of PinkFloyd's "Pigs On The Wing (1&2)" and "Pigs", James Taylor's "Mona", and of course Mr. Harrison's "Piggies".
A pleasant time was had by all . . . . except of course, maybe Mona . . . . |

I love any mountain, we don't make fun of any of them here in NM, I am NOT a vegetarian, here in NM the natives bury the pig in a fire heated trench and it is ambrosia when done, called "carnitas", usually everything is eaten from head to haunch in tortillas, with the host's secret sauce that will cause most of us gringos to do a dance and sing "Green Grow the Lilacs", inadvertently, while searching for agua and igniting the shot of tequila in our hands with our breath. That is a tradition that is 200 years old here, and 150 years ago the baille would last for days and weeks, as time was not considered a thing to interfere with civilized enjoyment of life and preoccupation with acquisition was a mortal sin.

In college we played for some friends who had a pig roast. A huge friggin' pig. The theme was hawaii 5-0. And it got played alnight long. It was like the blues brothers playing at that country bar, except we belonged. Finally, at about 11 one of the guys dressed up like a mauri, took a machete, chopped a watermelon in half , scooped out the insides, filled it with vodka and went amoungst the crowd, all dressed like tourists in hawaii, giving everyone a drink. Then the police came. The younger cop thought it was really funny and ridiculous, the older cop was disgusted. As things go these days, it was pretty tame. |

Location: NJ | If anyone's looking for some light Summer "beach" reading, and is into food and humour, I highly recommend "A Cook's Tour" by Anthony Bourdain. The book is based on the accomanying FoodNetwork TV show, and documents(in some "explicit" detail) Bordain's trip to exotic locations (VietNam, Portugal, Cambodia, France, Mexico, Japan) in search of the perfect meal. While the TV show is good, the book shows how much of it was "sanitized" for viewers, and pokes sardonic fun at the whole TV process. The "bend" that this thread took reminded me of the chapter on Portugal where a pig features VERY prominently.
Lots of indigenous food(s), lots of laughs!!!

Gotta again wish you a great show, visited Upper Darby in the 50s with a soldier buddy that lived there and enjoyed it greatly, especially the trolly line connecting all those little communities.

How far are we from Santa Fe? Not far in distance, but eons in attitude and sensibility, the "City Different" dwellers all are living in a past that doesn't exist even there. They live in those quaint old $500,000 adobes, while the real New Mexicans cut their grass and sweep their floors and live miles away in some colonia in mobile home parks. Here, we all live in mobile homes in some colonia except for the real New Mexicans, they live in east Las Cruces in $200,000 homes in neighborhoods that look a helluva lot like San Diego without the beaches.
Me, I live out here in a farm community and watch the chilies and cotton grow, called San Ysidro, patron saint of the farmer.
