Location: NJ | They said on the radio yesterday that it was the 35th anniversary of the first Crosby, Stills & Nash album. D-a-a-a-a-a-a-mn!!!
A bunch of years ago, I was at a gallery that was exhibiting the photographic works of Henry Diltz. Diltz has shot a LOT of famous (and infamous) rock album covers and portraits. Amidst of the framed prints of Morrison, the Doors, Zevon, Mitchell, Baez, and other luminary musical icons, was one print that I wanted . . . . . . badly.
It was a nicely framed print of Messrs. C S & N taken during the same "shoot" as the first album cover. They were sitting on that same ratty couch on that same porch . . . but they were seated in a different order, the camera angle was changed, and the focal point of the portait (them and the couch) was off center - more down and to the right, and more of the peeling clapboard filled the rest of the frame. That area was used as the background for the signatures of the three musicians and Mr. Diltz himself.
Sadly, it was marked "not for sale". Oh well . . .
A lot of people relate the BeachBoys as being the epitome of singing harmonies in rock music.
To me (along with the Beatles), it was these guys . .
And luckily, I get to see 'em do it again this August. |

Location: So. Cal. | I second that. They are without a doubt the group with the BEST vocal harmony out there. I will never get tired of telling or hearing the story of how Graham Nash blew Crosby and Stills away the first time they sang "You Don't Have to Cry" together. |

Stills' style of guitar influenced me alot. |

Location: NJ | I just heard a preview of a Crosby/Nash song from a forthcoming new album. Pretty good!
One of the best stories I'd heard was the night before Crosby went in for his liver transplant. Nash was visiting him late at night in his hospital room and the were talking. Both of them were well aware that it might be the last conversation they'd have with each other, but each chose not let the other one on . .
Nash gets up, wishes him luck, fights back the tears and heads for the door. In the doorway, he whips around, points his finger at Crosby and says menacingly:
"Don't you fuckin' LEAVE me with Stills!!!" :D |

Al: Sadly, I'd have to agree with you on the vocals (nowadays) sometimes.
I've been seeing 'em a bunch of times over the years, and you have to realize that these are guys who're "around" 60 and are singing songs they wrote in their 20's. Even Segovia lost his "fire" after a while. Still, sometimes it good just to enjoy the embers . . |

Location: Florida | the best concert I ever attended was a year and a half ago when CS&N&Y played down here in Ft Lauderdale.
Opening act? Forget it. The four just walked out, and played for an hour and 45 mintues straight. Short break, then 45 minutes of acoustic. Short break, another 45 minutes of softer electric stuff.
Part of the charm was Booker T & the MG's (Jones, Dunn, etc, all but Cropper) were the backup.
The harmony had me in tears a good portion of the night.
And yes, Crosby is as tenacious as ever, even if he looks like Ray Bolger doing the Cowardly Lion! |

Most of my early guitar years were spent learning and playing CSN & Y. One litmus test for an Acoustic is to play 4&20. |

Deja Vu and Helplessly Hoping are songs that still to this day make me feel the greatness of this artists.
Neil is great and gave them another twist, but I prefer him solo.
The first CSN album is still THE one.
A new DVD of an old PBS concert program just came out for sale. It is called "The Acoustic Concert" and it is just the 3 of them.
The harmonies are not as tight as they used to, but the presence of Crosby and Stills are very powerful.
I had a chance to meet Stephen Stills many years ago in Nashville at Gruhn Guitars and he was very kind and funny.
He speaks Spanish since he lived in Costa Rica as a kid, so we had a nice chat in Spanish and visited a little before more people started to gather and he had to leave. He was doing a round of press and promotion for one of his solo albums.
CSN changed the lives of many musicians, including mine.
I love them and listen to them often and now my 16 year old daughter Katia is into them as well.

Location: Zion, Illinois | I wouldn't write off ANY of these "old folks" yet. I got see Paul McCartney last year and he hasn't lost his voice yet. It also amazed me that someone his age could stay on stage for over 2 1/2 without having to answer the call of nature (I had to go twice).
Also last year I got to see Mike Smith (lead singer, keyboards for the Dave Clark Five) twice. He still has that leather lunged voice of his. It is very sad about his accident and the death of his only son. Sad.
Last Friday night and went to see Simon and Garfunkel, great concert. I was amazed that Artie could still hit some of those high notes. Paul still has it too. One unintentional funny part was when Paul sang on verse of "Bridge over Troubled Water". He kept waving his arms and hands every which way, looked like a belly dancer and he heard the chuckles. When we was done, he ran back for his guitar even though he didn't play it.
Great fun, let's hear it for all the old guys. |

He was also a banjo player. Played behind quite a number of acts, including America, John Stewart, Dan Fogelberg, and the Monkees. I remember quite a few album credits in the early - mid 70's. |

Location: Warrenton, Virginia | first time I saw Young was in a recording studio in memphis in 1975. Me and a buddy were doing "ol man".
turned around & there was Young....blew me away...
he was grinning...that epileptic grin....shook his hand and he said we did a good job with his tune.
Saw him again in concert in 1993 in the fall in Manchester NH....very small venue...great crisp weather and crisp sound. He did "gold rush" on an old pipe organ.
