what do you condider to be the best ovation collectors edition for sound quality and playability.

i have the first and second year and really think they are great. the 82 actuallt got an ovation from the crowd when a band member introduced it as if it were a member of the band. really pretty. very heavy. i don't play the 82 too much anymore, but play the 83 regularly. it almost has an electric guitar feel to the neck. i have it set up for .011-.050s and it makes a good fast blind bald bubba folk blues guitar that way.

i remember a discussion about this once and i can't remember if it was the redwood top or what was considered the best? gotta get my santa's list started.

Hi Russ:

I like the Collector's solid tops...Mid B... With an XLR additional hook up. I believe they are the best value in all Ovation land. I think 2 or 3 years fall into this group.

1987 is the best looking.

I do like the 2001 for the warm sound.

Woz.

The 84, that's the one I have, although the 87 had the best boots.

87. Just knocks my socks off. But then I've always been partial to a deep bowl Elite from the 80's. And one that purdy.....

87 - solid construction (it looks as good today as the day I brought it home from GC in '87).
87 - best appointment of all.
87 - moody likes it too, so I bought two.

Ever since I first saw/played one at a NJ guitar show (where I first met Al & Miles btw :-) I've always had an affinity for the 2001 (Redwood) Edition. The color, depth, and figuring of that top just mezmerizes me . . . when you look at it, you just HAVE to "stare" into it . . .

The tone of it is also very distinctive . . very "warm". It kinda' "sounds" the way redwood "looks" . . .

I agree with Cliff... my 2001 redwood is warm and deep... and garners very nice comments about the beauty of the wood and tone...

...now if only they would comment warmly about my playing

I feel like the FD14 should be included in the mix. It's not on the "official" list, but it was never available to the masses and is one of the most beautiful guitars they ever made.

That changes everything. If the FD14 is fair game, then I officially change my vote. FD14 is the best sounding wood topped guitar that Ovation has ever built. PERIOD. CLICK. SHUT OFF COMPUTER.

I'd have to go with the 2000 model. Beautiful Australian Lacewood. Excellent tone. Very comfortable soft V neck...

One of these days I'm going to buy one of Wong's 87 Collectors. Also, Witko has to pick another guitar instead of the 97, since he's selling his.

thanks paul. look forward to seeing them.

the 87 isn't the one on the ovation book cover jacket, is it?

i thought somewher a year or more back there was a thread about the redwood top guitars or one from around the millenium that was highly rated by members for the best sound. a termite proof top that sounds good has me thinking........

they are a great guitar.

Extending this to the best Ovation limited edition, disregarding whether one has an OP-50 or acoustic only:

FD-14
97 Collector's parlor
1776 Patriot
2001 Collector's redwood

I must say, other than the 2002 Collector's - never played any of the others.

I recently bought on ebay an 1984 Collectors. Its my first Ovation ever and I love it dearly. For unplugged practice and strumming for my son it is just perfect. It sounds great and will keep it for a long time.

Did some research and for run of the mill people like me a simple well built shallow body is perfect.. I am n the look out for a 1983 thay I also find outstanding.

In essence I have much respect for Ovation engineers. they do put their heart in making great instruments.

SHOULD SOUND THE SAME SINCE IT IS BASSICALLY THE SAME GUITAR.
