Location: puerto vallarta, mexico | i couldn't find the thread where someone was addressing 12 string mandolin hybrids. the followings are a few of the protypes i had made in the 80's in paracho mexico. 12 frets to the body with a wide neck. i think there were about a dozen prototypes total that i had made, all with custom cases. nice abalone inlay. i never put pickup on one, but now that i have them out, i think i might just soup one up. i play them strung like a 12 string with extra lights of nashville tuning all pairs. attention getter and a bluegrass sound for sure.
well i thought i was going to put them here. i can't seem to copy them and paste them here. how do you do that once they are in "my pictures" in my computer?

thanks, i'll try that tomorrow, or later today that is. i have a feeling i had TOO much fun tonight. i have been playing with the best bass player i ever have the pleasure of playing with. what a great gig. only a dozen patrons, but one brought some glenmorange single malt. i havent had that since '67 in scotland. |

i'm sure you want more than a wall hanging, but you can certainly pick one out of the photos, or from the others i have in santa fe. i'll be there in may. there is only one i have to keep out of the photos, since it was a gift from the luthier. has a cool abalone clover inlay. a few in santa fe have terminal neck syndrome and are true wall hangings. i can take one i have here with me on the trip to los angeles this weekend or give it to you in person if you come to namm in jan. the second is preferred of course.
i'll post the photos tomorrow to keep me from watching the blood bath on wall street all day. |

Please don't act on this as my knowledge and record on the market is not good. Oil prices are probably the biggest influence now, but keep in mind gas is still available, price is not nearly as important as availability. In the 70's under Carter I had two cars, I would drive one to work and my wife would sit in a gas line with the other to get some gas for the next day. Price would have been no problem within reason compared to scarcity when we depend on our cars for our living. The "pundits" watch every penny of gas price increase and trumpet it to high heaven, the increases so far probably add $75 a month to most commuters, about what they spend on pizza. If any of our suppliers decide that China is the future, get out your bicycle and learn to ride, ride, ride as the cowboys say.

There it is, and it is kinda big but it is a good picture, that thing is interesting and I can see some Paracho trademarks in it's construction, also it looks like the strings are strung like the Byrd's 12 string with the high string on top. also note, 14 frets to the body not 12. My first mandolin was made in Mexico, probably in Paracho, a flat top that I gave to a young player who was showing a great deal of promise when I bought my first folk type of mandolin.
I should mention for the Gringos here that Paracho is a town that is the center of Mexican string instrument construction, known for it's excellence.

time for snooze between sets. at least it is starting to feel that way again. now that my snow bird musician amigos are returning, the season is taking shape. might even include a once a week bluegrassy thingie. including washboard. hope to jam with you this year while i'm in santa fe. maybe i'll make a break for the border some weekend and pick you up on the way. or come up to the mountains and bring your axe. |

That looks pretty cool!
It reminds me of something I saw Steve Howe play at the beginning of "Your Move". He described it as a "Vachalia (sp)" or a "Portugese 12-string" (though I seem to recall hearing later that that statement may have been incorrect).
"Chingaderos" you say they're called??
(Me thinks I'll have to start sniffing around some of the funky little Latin-American music shops in the area.) I've become "intrigued" . . :-)
Of course, it'd probably be easier to just save up for a mando and learn to play one, but I've never really be known t'do things the "easy" way . . :rolleyes: |

i dont think you will find anything like these in a music store. these were custom made for me per my instructions, by the luthier. chingadero is is a slang term that means "fu$%ing thing". the closest thing you might find is a vanduria which has 10 strings (5 pairs), although i told the luthier he should make these becayse gringos would buy them. the vanduria has like 7 frets to the body and i think you have to surgicaly alter yout fingers to fit the narrow frets. when i had these made in the mid 80's i had never seen any. it was an interesting project, but an accident i had derailed the project, and i could never decide which one to sell anyway. i liked them all because each one was a step forward. |

if you can lift the couch you can have it for free. it is built into the house (actually my office/studio) out of masonry. there are two that join at a built in tile table. in the tropics with major insects and scorpions, having built in furniture eilimintes hiding places the fabric is marine sunbrella which i bought from a leftovers bin at the hatteras yacht company. bullet proof last for ever stuff.
the couches double as 2 single beds. there is an identical setup in our house. our kingsize beds are also masonry as well as book shelves and all kitchen counters and shelves. i never have to move the furniture when kathleen gets that urge most gals seem to have to experiment with a new arrangement of the furniture.
life in the tropics is very interesting and different. |

I love this idea though. Too bad ovation/applause doesn't make something a guitarlin. I'm thinking take the applause uke and beef it up a little. At a price point of $500 I'd buy one. |

hey bailey,
this one is strung with 12 string extra lights. strung in normal 12 fashion. this one and the one like it with round sound hole, as well as the clover one were the last three made. actually the clover one was a gift from the luthier who was a son of parachos most revered luthier, rubio. i have a rubio classical i bought around 1980. the last gitolins had 14 frets to the body.
i string some in nashville tuning style in pairs of equal string gauge using the smaller diameter strings and tuning of a normal 12 string set (10's). that makes the g-d-e .009-.014-.010. sounds really cool. i also have used pairs of .032 to .009 in pairs tuned to standard tuning. with the shorter scale you can get away with an .032 tuned to low e.
like most aquaintances here in mexico, a first handshake can become an interesting life long friendship i would hang out in rubio's shop playing his fine guitars and chew the fat with him as he worked on a current project. we spoke about a mini bodied 12 string with a real neck, and one afternoon when i came in he had a roughed out one for me to look at that he put his son on to build. the woods didn't even come close to matching as it was built from scraps. rubio liked this idea becaude he could cut and work around flaws in wood not up to his standards for guitars. |
