Location: Texas | In the old days, Ovations did not have a strap button on the neck side of the body. Ovation was nice enough to send me their button and molly nut assembly, but it is not exactly intuitive. In comparing it to a CC-13 (I'm so ashamed) I think I get the general idea, but the bolt does not reach the threads in the nut assembly, so I don't understand how to get it started. Can anyone give me some insight?

How old is your ovation? If the neck has a truss rod, you don't need the molly. In old truss rod models there's a wood block in the body where the neck joins it. The button is screwed into the block. Drill a pilot hole and use a thin 1" wood screw with a small head. I have a bunch of these screws and I can send you one. On my old Legend it is attached under the neck joint, but I think it can go above it too. |

Location: SoCal | I had the same problem. Go to a hardware store with the screw you have and just ask them for a longer one with the same threads. Piece o' cake. Welcome to the board.

It is a 1972 Balladeer ... serial number is 001697. Not many frills, but it's served me well. I must confess, however, I didn't buy it until '75. I just peeked inside, and sure enough there is what appears to be the block of wood you are referring to. Looks to me like it would have made the "molly nut" solution pretty tricky to install. I'll get a ruler out and figure out where the inside block relates to the outside and go from there.
