OK, I resemble that remark about photo quality. I'm gettin' a bit tired of the myopia of my little Concord 4 meg. Focal length sucks green bananas, and the clarity stinks, too.
So, if I'm shellin' out $300.00, what should I look for? Needs to do close-up work, and have good-to-excellent resolution.
Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread, but thought this quiery was "timely & ascendant".

I just bought an Olympus sp-510uz. Very happy with the results and it should be approximately in your price range...US$.

10X optical zoom
good 'steady' feature for long shots.
Easy to figure out....except for the part where I accidentally reformatted the chip on day 5 of the Mexican holiday....

Canon Powershot 520 is what I use. It either doesn't have or I haven't figured out the macro but it can be had at about $250.

Now if I could only have some of Bru's guitars!
