Anyone know what they're putting on new Ovations? I'm replacing my 6778LX strings, don't like them, but thought I was putting on lighter strings with some Elixir Polywebs custom light. Turns out the stock strings are *much* lighter.

I may be wrong, but I believe that D'Add.EXP Lights is what's coming on guitars from the Factory . . .

Stock strings from the factory are D'Addario EXP .012"-.053".

Wow...these must be different then. The low-E on the Elixirs is .052, and it's substantially fatter than what's on there (which if it were .053, couldn't tell much difference).

Thanks!

I put Elixir lights on, and they seemed tight and hard to play. Switched to Elixir extra lights, and they're good, although the E (.047) seemed a little floppy.

Also, while I've been happy with the strings put on from the factory (EXP lights), when I went to put on regular D'Addario lights (EJ16) they seem heavier than what came from the factory. Are EXP lower tension that regular D'Addario maybe?

No.

But I would suggest you get a cheap set of "slide rule" calipers to verify the gauges of your strings

In my opinion, anything lighter than 11's sounds too thin. There has got to be balance between tone and playability. RiffD, try some of the Ernie Ball Super Slinky's (2148) 11-50. As named, they actually are pretty "slinky". More so than some of the other brands like D'addario(EJ26).

Ovations usually come with 12-53's from the factory. If you bought it with thinner strings, than someone changed them out.

...when I asked Ovation, they said the factory-installed strings on my AE68 Viper were D'Addario EXP17 (0.013"-0.056").
