has anyone heard of a pickup system for a 12 string guitar that has a three way switch 1) full 12 string 2) standard 6 strings 3) octave strings + B and high E? or even just a two way for settings 1 & 2?

i don't know if such a thing would be viable but the idea struck me yesterday and it hurt. i think it would be cool to play my 1688 plugged in as both a 12 or a 6 at the flick of a switch.

I agree, that would be pretty cool Randy. I don't know much about electronics but wouldn't it require some pretty selective pups?

The most recent edition of Musician's Friend has a Fender that does just that!

I'll find a link somewhere.

G'night

Interesting! Sort of like the stereo string separation Ovation put out taken to a whole new level. Have you checked out the Hex-FX system Ovation had out in the early 90's? The 12 string aspect adds some complexity but I'm sure it could be done.

i thought about the stereo system and that it would be similar in application. it would take individual piezos for each string and since the strings are so close to each other at the bridge/saddle i was wondering if it would work. since woody says he saw a fender setup like that, i guess so.
(my 1537 had the stereo piezo setup)

It is the Fender VG, with a review of the VXT on the other side of the page. It is a 6 string that can switch to sound like a 12. Probably easier that way.
