I made a couple of offers but the guy won't budge off of that $900 price even with the missing volume knob and the crack on the face. Good luck. Edited by dba 2018-01-17 12:17 PM

Even if done well such repairs should be mentioned. Action looks quite high which - if true - could indicate a sunken top. Difficult to judge from the photos.

I was looking for one too, and ones in allot worse shape were allot more money! They are VERY hard to find, and their sound is out of this World! The '79's have the Truss Rod and the handlaid bowl, unlike the later models with the KBar neck and manufactured bowls. A volume knob is an email away from John Budny, and the crack is just cosmetic unless you are a Collector. This one has been repaired and cleated, so it is sound. I know the Seller of this Guitar, he is a very well respected OFC'er here, and extremely honest. Bottom line is that, if that price is what he thinks is a Fair Price, and you don't, start looking somewhere else. That is what I do! Edited by Nancy 2018-01-17 5:00 PM

Bingo. These are hard to find gems and $900 certainly reflects a discount for the cosmetic issues.
Consider this one that sold with a $1250 price: https://reverb.com/item/269897-ovation-custom-legend-12-string-1658-1981-natural-gloss Or this one for $1300: https://artisanguitars.com/ovation-1658-custom-legend-12-string-sitka-top-pre-owned-1980-id-11618 Or this one that was that was even more: https://reverb.com/item/1431992-ovation-custom-legend-1658-79-82 There are plenty more examples, but I think the point is made. $900 for that guitar is a steal.

I've had several Ovations with that (my 1113 has one). I'd bet almost anything that the neck and headstock are stable. And the 2 dings in the face are nothing. $900 is a very fair price for that guitar. If I were in the market, I'd go for it and not look back..... Edited by moody, p.i. 2018-01-17 10:26 PM

I tune it down to D, which I would advice to all of you who have one. I would also assume that the crack in the headstock of the reverb guitar is only in the surface, I´ve seen these often. The crack in the top should be cared for, but this is repairable. Most old 16xx 12strings have a hump in the fretboard behind the 12th fret. You should calculate a complete re-fret in your plan. A repaired 1658 still is much better than many, if not most, brand-new 12 string guitars.

Joined: September 2007 Posts: 108 | Thanks for this. exactly what I'm looking for. My experience says the neck crack is just the varnish. Question with the 2 input jacks. I'm not familiar. How does this set up work? special preamp?

My experience says the neck crack is just the varnish. Question with the 2 input jacks. I'm not familiar. How does this set up work? special preamp? One output is Mono (normal). The other output is Stereo... "Stereo" being that 1-3-5 strings(pairs) go to one side, and the 2-4-6 go to the other. Some may find this useful for something at some time.
