Joined: October 2015 Posts: 7 Location: Adairsville, GA | As I have said on another thread, I am looking for a new Ovatiaon (read, another Ovation). I have looked at several used Ovations and just now saw wehre Mr. Ovation has posted the Model Numbers Decoded thread. I am very greatful for that. It is and will be a great help. My question came about because of the GC code which indicates that a guitar was built for Guitar Center. Here is my question .... Is there any difference in the quality or in any other way of those guitars compared to an Ovation that was sold in a regular music store. I have been watching one on Craig's List that has a GC code and has the flamed finish. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

That said, I own a Elite GC model (mid bowl, gloss black, spauled maple eppies) ... that is nick named the Over Achiever. It's not on par with my AD-II or UTE, but for what it is, it's really good.

I have a USA-made GCS771, which is a Balladeer Special made for GC... The major difference being an "Abalone" rosette. I had a GC057 Celebrity, a CC057 for GC... "Abalone" rosette, plus an OP4BT preamp instead of an OP-20. Apparently GC likes them "Abalone" rosettes. A GC Celebrity... is still a Celebrity. A USA-made GC Ovation was still made at New Hartford. That probably wasn't much help. Edited by Old Man Arthur 2016-01-29 2:23 PM

I don't think there is any difference in quality or attention to detail between the GC and non-GC models. You may find some minor differences in things such as specific model of preamp, fretboard wood (ebony vs rosewood), finish on the tuners (chrome vs painted). But I believe the parts are the same as you'd find on any USA made O, just that the non-GC equivalent might have slightly different cosmetics. My daughter's former bandmate had a GC178 which was the equivalent of a 1778LX. Her guitar IIRC had a maple neck rather than the 5 piece skunk stripe neck on the LX version. It was a stellar sounding O, btw, one of the best I've ever heard. A GC model isn't going to be inferior but it may have those minor differences in cosmetics or features.

Same guitar. Same Quality. Same Everything. Except that my GCXT older and has "limited run" serial number of 117/200. (no, it is not a shiny bowl flame model)

Some were to build a more affordable model like the GCS771 or the S868-4GC Here are a few I've had. GCXT-RF ![]() S868-4GC ![]() 1779-5GC ![]() I still have this one... 1777-4GC ![]()

It is orange with lighter orange flames. It is listed at $475 with a case. At the same time there is another GCXT that looks identical. They are asking $1900.
