I've been thinking a lot about trying to get the absolute best amplified acoustic sound out of my 1537. I remember a long time ago, reading about someone (professional) having a bridge/condensor mic combo installed by the factory.

Does anyone know what something like that would cost??

Hi Brian,

great to see you back here.

I've had a '95 Collectors which had the Optimax.preamp and a condenser mic in the Bridge. I personally was not blown away be the sound of the mic. Pretty fast you got feetback when playing without the soundholeplug, and with the plug the Sound was really ugly.
In my oppinion the new FET-preamps are the best, especially for this great guitar.

I'd suggest trying a sound board transducer system like the K&K in combination with the ovation bridge pickup.and using a stereo out to keep the signal paths separate for optimizing the processing

Interesting that this came up, as I was considering adding an SBT to my C2079LX, but instead of a stereo jack I want to add a second mono jack. What has stopped me so far is the uncertainty of drilling through the bowl. Has anyone drilled through this material and is there anything in particular to be concerned about?

to drill a hole in the body is easy. The drill has not to be very sharp. The ones made for brass are the best choice. I've drilled lots of holes in the bodies. I've upgrated all of my old ones ( with the old single knob or stacked knobs) to the OP-Pro-series preamps with XLR Output.

I was really impressed by the natural sound on my 1115. If you add a second jack think about using the endpin strap location as it is already reinforced. It is a bit of a pain to get the metal thread insert out, I bent up the tabs from the inside and worked it loose. You are left with a guide hole to enlarge, the fiberglass drills easily. These jacks are usually stereo if you want to get carried away down the road with a mike etc.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Sorry I didn't get back sooner to check this, but the holidays and a complete rehab of our condo has eaten up a lot of my "retired time" lately. I forgot about the possibility of feedback with the condensor, since I haven't dealt with feedback issues in a long time. What I'm missing from the built-in (NOS) FET system is the fine nuances and pure acoustic sound that you get coming out of those holes. I'm not convinced that a board transducer would accomplish what I'm looking for. I know nothing of the SBT, Barberra, or K&K pick-ups you guys have mentioned. Could you give me some layman's terms descriptions of those for a sound novice such as myself? Or... Should I really be looking for a good microphone on a stand like the bluegrass guys are so fond of? (I don't like being tied to a stand though)

If you go to the K&K website they have sound samples of the different systems. On my 1115 they sound like the guitar, just louder. It is warm and detailed. Their system including a mike would be the next step up or you could start with a mike and see if it does the job.
