Given the differences between deep bowl, mid bowl and shallow, are the sizes the same within those groups ? If I needed a case for , say a 1758, would the case from my 1617 fit ? Are the third party cases worth getting ?

My Celebrity came with a Roadrunner case when I bought it used. I think its a great case. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another one.

The mid- and deep-bowls use the same Ovation cases, wither #8158 or 9158. (The latter is a much nicer case.) The SSB guitars reequire a shallower case whose number I cannot recall off the top of my head. As the cases are reasonably priced for a new one, I have never bothered with the after-market types.

Oddly enough, my only real grump with Ovation (Other than sending 99.5% of production overseas.) involves their cases. I REALLY wish they had a true, well-built, archtop style case as an option. I know it's possible since they provided a stellar case for their parlor body size. Several OFCers have grumped about this for years now.

I saw this thread and just KNEW it would be you...

Just wait til Bob sees this one.

Another thing to watch out for regarding cases, the contour bowls don't fit in the old (desirable) brown ones. Not sure if yours is contour or not, but WHEN you buy one, (I reckon sooner rather than later) its something to keep in mind.

Lastly, my 1768, which is a deep bowl cutaway elite, was acquired with a non Ovation case that looked to all intents and purposes to be an Ovation case. The Contour bowl wouldn't fit in that either.

I was kinda' looking to getting a contour bowl guitar, just because it was newer and my Anti-Ovation friend would have one less thing to complain about. As it turns out, the guitar on it's way is a standard deep bowl.

But ... what about the total length ? Are 12 strings longer , due to the larger head stock, than the 6 string versions ?

I guess I'll know in about a week.

I don't know what you guys are going to do now. I won't have all these questions, since I just purchased a guitar and the post count in the forum is going to drop like a stone. Maybe there will be more posts of the "UPS Girl" to keep people visiting.

It doesn't make a difference for 12ers case-wise. The standard O-case will fit. Check your PMs. I have a used case that is contemporary to your guitar (1987-black) that I can sell. It's in very good shape.

If my old one will fit, I may just use that. I don't gig with them so they all will stay in a row on my wall. But if I DID need to take it somewhere, if it fits in my old one, that should be good enough. Unless I need to grab them both !

My 1638 Elite 12 is in the same case as my 07C.

If you buy an American made Ovation 12 or 6-string, don't worry, get what you want. Let your friend complain... It'll be yours and, I'm willing to bet, it'll compare favorably with pretty much anything he owns!

I own (3) deeep bowl, old O's. All are great!

I recall there being an issue with the baritone customs. Ovation made a guitar that they could not fit in a case. Not sure how Stephen resolved this for the pair of custom baritones he ordered a few years ago, but I know it wasn't all that easy. Some of the older brown cases Ovation provided with their solid bodied models from the late 70's and early 80s are also of slightly different sizes. I only learned this after I started building storage racks for a half dozen of these cases and darned if the measurements and tolerances didn't get all screwed up because the cases were not uniform in size.
