Location: London,UK | Hello again - a while ago I posted about my fabulous 1624-Country Classic which has totally taken over from my previous nylon strung guitars (Godin Multiac and Fox Amazona) in the Russian folk/Klezmer band I play in.
I have been offered a steel string Ovation with the label missing and it seems like a nice instrument. It is not from a dubious source but I am not sure which model it is, although I am guessing it is a balladeer. The stripe on the back of the neck is the same design as on my (1982) 1624-4 - the top looks like solid spruce - the volume control is near the neck join rather than on top of the upper bout and it has a solid USA feel to it. The case is the same brown Ovation case as I have with my 1624. What I am trying to avoid is having one of the aluminium (that's how we spell it in England!) fretboards as I have heard they can be difficult to re fret or one of the budget models (which I am pretty sure this isn't) My guess is it is from the same era as my nylon string. Any ideas or advice? Thanks. |

Location: Jet City | Is there a truss rod cover? Can you describe the inlays? Is the fretboard bound?
Pictures would help for sure, but if it's got the stripes on the neck, it's not a aluminum fretboard |

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | Pictures would help a lot. Is it a standard headstock or slotted? Is The neck bound? What type of inlays on the fretboard? Nickel or gold tuners? Is there a serial number sticker inside the guitar up near the neck? (A small white sticker with probably six digits on it.)

Location: London,UK | It's got standard dot inlays and a standard headstock - I think the tuners were nickel - I actually saw it at a gig I played earlier today and it was the 'house guitar' at a folk club and receives the standard non Ovation player response (it keeps slipping when I play it etc) So I have offered them a cedar Art & Lutherie guitar in exchange (nice but the body feels uncomfortable to me) I didn't notice the serial number but I have one in the place you mentioned on my 1624-4 so I probably would have noticed it if it was there. From what I have seen the Celebrity and Applause models have more comprehensive on board electrics whereas this seemed to have just the volume (not a stacked vol/tone) |

Are you certain the inlays are dots instead of diamonds?
Is the guitar a cutaway? |

Location: Jet City | If its deep bowl, striped neck, dots with no binding, and has a truss rod cover, it's an older balladeer most likely.
Truss rod covers went away in the 80s and returned with the newer LX series |
