This was mentioned in another thread and I didn't want to hijack it, but . . .

Does anyone use a tip jar?

I don't. To me it's like begging. I'm getting paid for the gig or I wouldn't be there. If there's a request and I know it, I play it. All part of the service.

There are always insistent people who won't take no for an answer. I tell them it's going to charity. And it does, every dime, to a local battered women's shelter.

Where one is not paid outright, I have noticed that owners (of some establishments) distribute special envelopes to all the tables for contributions toward the band. It works quite well and takes the stigma of "begging" out of the equation. Worth a suggestion to a decent venue manager!

Suggestion for the man on a budget: learn to use a LightScribe CD drive (or nice labeler), make some cheap, classy CDs and sell 'em! Even at $5 a pop for a demo, you'd be surprised what you come away with.

when doing a duo we would leave a case open with a couple of dollars in it to prime the pump.

depending on how much alcohol was brought into the restaurant often depended on the tips
I think people like to get something for their money so I see many people selling cd's
they are rather reasonble at discmasters these days

Depends on the area.
Amelia Island most places have a tip jar.
O'Kanes always does for Davis and Pam
At teh Wednesday singer/songwriter there isn't one, but it's a contest with paid winners. When we do Writers in the Round (who don't get paid) there is always a tip jar.
In NC nobody does. Except on the streets of Asheville. Ever notice how stupid white kids look in dreadlocks?

I do n`t mind people having a tip-jar , after all , ye do not have to give anything .. , I do n`t have one , it`s a liability to me , because I do n`t want to do requests .
Over here , it`s uncommon , however , some go around with a saucer , saying " something for the music " ..not sure what to think of that..

I just suggest to the audience that if they have any requests to write them down on a twenty dollar bill and pass it up, of course there are no refunds if I don't know the song !! Yea, I don't get alot of requests but it usually gets a laugh.
