I went back over to Bend last Thursday evening & enjoyed myself once again. There were some more new people there. This time there were two guys playing stand-up bass fiddles & another guy that could pick the hell out of a banjo & mandolin. Pretty fair guitar player too.
I found out the "other guy's" name is Dean. I chatted a little more with him and a guy that played a dobro slide guitar & a Taylor, he lives about as far south of Bend as I do north. Want's to get together somewhere, sometime, we'll have to work on it. Nice guys.
I'm getting smarter too. This time I took a guitar stand & two "adjustable nuts", one for the 6 175 & one for the 12 O.
Dean was really admiring my Elite while it was on the stand. Especially the neck, he liked the width. I offered it to him but we were just getting going & he said he'd like to try it later when there was more time. I told him he could also try/buy a six string Ovation with a neck just about like it about a block down the street, right where I got mine. I played one there that had a pretty wide neck, maybe a Folklore? I'm going to talk him into trying an Ovation, he sure kept eyeballing mine. (Of course, it was far & away the *prettiest* guitar there. I liked having it on the stage looking cool when I was playing the 175.)

While I was playing music in Bend, my wife was at a Jefferson County employee supervisors dinner thing. (She's the head bean-counter for the county.)
I never go to those things & they always ask her where I am. (I'm always busy when they have those, just a co-incidence.) This time she told 'em I was in Bend playing music, because there was nobody around here to play with.
Well, the County Sheriff was there too, & now he want's me to come over & play music with him & his partner :) They actually have a little band ("Two guys that play music for money"" that plays a lot of the same general "assortment" of music that I play. I've heard them before at a get-together in the Culver City Park & they aren't half bad. Jack (Sheriff) has a good voice & plays an electric flat top. The other guy, Greg, (a county sheriff deputy) plays an electric of some sort & sings. At the park they had two kids playing with 'em. Not sure who's kids they were. One was playing a bass guitar & the other one playing electric drums. They were all having fun.
I thought at the time that it would be fun to play with 'em. Now, since I have an invite, what the hell, "Two Cops, two Kids & an old Biker" might sound pretty good together too. It will be fun to be around cops & not be given some sort of "driving award" when we part company. :)
This is an unexpected turn of events, it will be interesting to see how we get along. I have a feeling we'll hit common ground right away with guitars in our hands. I've already heard them play & I know most all the stuff they were playing. The stuff I didn't know I could learn in a few minutes. I'm looking forward to a new musical adventure. All of a sudden I'm finding lots of people to play with. This is great! I will keep you all posted.

Nils

P.S.
I just managed to learn the main parts of "Classical Gas" the other night. I need to hear it again so I can get the beginning & end, but I have most of it. My fingers suddenly started working together. It was kinda weird, like the very first time I could keep a beat. Suddenly, wham, I could do it. It sounds WAY cool on my Elite 12- & I haven't tried it plugged in yet! I'm getting sore fingertips on fingers that have never been used much before. This is cool. :D

Holy Crap

If you play a bad note, you could be jailed for life. Biker? playing with Sheriff, use your one phone call to log on to OFC so we can laugh at your predicament (nobody here would contribute to your bail, as we have all heard the songs "nobody to go my bail" and wouldn't want to violate tradition". Sounds like a lot of great fun, I envy your jammin' (but don't ask for bail money).

They wouldn't dare arrest me for one bad note (unless maybe it was a "C-note" with a dead president on the front). After all, my wife makes out their paychecks! :)

Wasn't that part of a song?
"I am a bean-counter for the county....."
something like that.

Hey Nils:

I've got Classical Gas (well, actually, after dinner last night I really had classical gas) in tab. If you want a copy, email ma and I'll fax it out to you.

Thanks for the offer Paul M., but I can't read tab. I downloaded it in tab, that's how I got the chords, then I went by how I remembered it. I need to hear it again a few times to get the rest back in my head. Once I get it all playing in my head I'll be able to play it.
What annoys me most is that I *had* the "20 Year re-union of the Smothers Brothers Show" on video tape laying around here for years with Mason Williams playing Classical Gas & I now I can't find it. I have a feeling it got taped over:/ That tape would really make it easy, since I could watch him play it, (now that my fingers are finally co-operating with each other.)
A buddy of mine has it on a CD but he can't seem to find that either. He found the box but not the CD. He thinks it's in his pickup that's in the shop being repaired after leaving him stranded (again).
I would buy a copy of it if I could find one. The one my friend has is on a CD of Golden Oldie instrumentals.
Maybe he'll find it in his truck.

Thanks for the offer,

Nils

I seem to be bound and determined to help you on this. I've got that tape. The sound quality is not great but I'll make a copy for you if you'd like. (there may be something else on the tape because the machine I use makes it difficult to do anything but copy the enitre tape -- Debbie Does Detroit or something).

You mean you have the video tape??! That would be GREAT! Thanks! Sound quality is not really a concern, (especially during Debbie Does Detroit). As long as I can hear the melody & actually see him play it, learning the rest of it will be much easier. That whole show was really good. I will email you my snail mail & send you whatever the cost is. Thanks!

Side note: I just got home from my daughter's wedding. I gained a great son-in-law & three more grandchildren. That makes 8 :)
